Excerpt from The Solutions of the Geometrical Problems The Examination Papers which the Author has select ed for solution in the present Treatise have been proposed in the several years from 1830 to 1846 to the students of St John's College at the end of their fourth term of resi dence, and according to the plan which he adopted in the solution of the Trigonometrical Problems, he has endea voured to place them before the reader in a proper form for the inspection of the examiner. The problems are sufficiently varied in their character to exercise the student in the ordinary properties of the straight line, circle, and conic sections; they have been proposed by some of the most distinguished members of the society; the generality of the results are remarkable for their neatness and simplicity; and except in one instance it is needless here to make any further comment. In Question 6, Dec. 1833. (no. IV), it is required To inscribe in a circle a triangle Whose sides or sides produced shall pass through three given points in the same plane. Excerpt from Hints for the Solution of Problems in the Third Edition of Solid Geometry Mr. Chree, Mr. Berry, and Mr. Richmond have shewn no discontinuity in their kindness, for they have not only corrected the proof sheets, but have detected important errors in the problems, as in LX. (7) (mr. Berry), and in LVIII. (3) (mr. Richmond) the geometrical solutions of LII. (1) and LXIV. (9) were given by Mr. Berry and Mr. Richmond. I wish to thank Mr. Chree especially for his superintendence of the printing during my absence in the Long Vacation, and I am glad to have this opportunity of noticing a great improvement on the last two lines of my solution of XLIII. Which was suggested by him but unfortunately arrived too late viz; if (x, y, z, w) be the centre. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Key, Containing Solutions and Explanations of the Problems in the Last Four Books of the Elements of Geometry: For the Use of Teachers Only Having carefully read the advanced sheets of Greenleaf's Geometry, I am happy to be able to assure you that the work appears to me to be one of great merit. Of course. No person can expect to find much that is essentially new ina geometrical treatise published at this day. But Mr. Greenleaf's. While it is based, like nearly all American Geometries, upon Legendre's original work, contains valuable propositions not usually found in similar publications, and also presents uncommonly clear demonstrations of many of the standard propositions. The definitions contained in this work are generally consise. Clear. And exact. The exercises in Mensuration, and in the Application of Algebra to Geometry, will be found unusually interesting and useful. In a word, I have no doubt that Mr. Greenleaps Geom etry will be found to compare favorably with the best Geometries yet published. Excerpt from Note-Book on Practical Solid or Descriptive Geometry: Containing Problems With Help for Solutions IN teaching a large 'class, if the method of lecturing and demonstrating from the black - board only is pursued, the l more intelligent students have generally to be kept back, from the necessity of frequent repetition, for the sake of u/ the less promising; if the plan of setting problems to each pupil is adopted, the teacher finds a difficulty in giving to each sufficient attention. A judicious combination of both methods is doubtless the best, though this is not always easy of attainment in working with numbers - the use of this book may help in accomplishing it. It is suggested that at the beginning of a chapter, and in some cases with each problem, the teacher should give a black-board explanation, carefully pointing out any fresh steps, before sending his pupils to their work. The number I of examples in each chapter to be worked out by the student is, of course, left to the teacher's judgment of the progress and requirements of his pupil. Excerpt from First Step in Geometry: A Series of Hints for the Solution of Geometrical Problems With Notes on Euclid, Useful Working Propositions and Many Examples Geometrical deductions are problems which are intended to be solved by the application of recognised geometrical methods and propositions. They are divided into several classes. A geometrical deduction is termed a rider when it is given as an exercise on a particular proposition. It generally happens that the difficulty of a deduction is greatly diminished when it is given in this way, for we know in what direction to seek for a solution. When a deduction is presented as a rider, it is, of course, expected that the proposition to which the deduction is appended shall be made use of in the solution. It will occasionally happen, with carelessly constructed riders, that a simpler solution, not in volving this proposition, is available; but generally there can be no difficulty in so arranging the proof as to introduce the proposition on which the deduction is supposed to be founded.
