Many scholars disagree about what was meant by Jesus’s intriguing self-designation ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου (the Son of Man). This book attempts to find some clarity by working through every example of the phrase in the Gospel of Mark to determine how the phrase functions and what it means in that narrative. While every use of the phrase is self-referential and describes Jesus and his ministry, the analysis yields three main distinctions in use of the phrase as well as three significant unifying features. The book then moves to explore whether, despite of the skepticism of some scholars, there is some background for the phrase in the book of Ezekiel’s use of בֶּן־אָדָם (son of man) in relation to basic form and function and to thematic import.

The book thus offers a challenge to the present trend of interpretation which has recently been strengthened by the studies of A. J. B. Higgins and H. E. Through the use of current intertextual methods and narrative criticism, this book offers a fresh examination of the Son of Man in Mark, developing the conclusions of Morna Hooker's 1967 work, The Son of Man in Mark: A Study of the Background of the Term "Son of Man" and Its Use in St. Mark's Gospel. Contrary to recent scholarship that argues Mark's Son of Man does not make any thematic or christological contribution to the Gospel and/or that the OT background of the Son of Man phrase is irrelevant, this work demonstrates that the Son of Man, when examined in light of Daniel 7, advances one of Mark's major themes: the transition of the locus of Yahweh's saving presence from the Jerusalem temple to a new covenant community that is not only founded on the Son of Man's sacrificial death but also is vindicated at his coming in the heavenly temple.

The opening chapter surveys the history of scholarship regarding the problematic use of the phrase 'son of man' in the New Testament. It also explains why this problem could not be solved until recently. Casey then presents the relevant Aramaic evidence. He offers a careful discussion of the use of the Aramaic term 'son of man' in the light of over 30 examples of the use of this term by speakers who are referring to themselves. Chapters 4-9 discuss authentic examples of this idiom in the teaching of Jesus, with Aramaic reconstructions of each saying. All but one of these sayings is found in Mark or 'Q'. There is then a full discussion of secondary sayings in the Synoptic Gospels. The first ones dependent on Daniel 7.13 belong to the earliest Gospel, which also contains the results of translating genuine sayings of Jesus from Aramaic into Greek. There is a discussion of the transition process between authentic Aramaic sayings of Jesus and Greek 'son of man' sayings in the synoptic Gospels. This argument builds on work in the field of translation studies, and the work of ancient translators, especially of the Septuagint. Casey argues that Gospel translators deliberately translated both literally and creatively to produce a new Christological title. It is this tradition that is evident in the Fourth Gospel: its 'son of man' sayings fit perfectly into Johannine theology. The final chapter draws together a complete solution to this difficult problem.

Over the past two millennia, scholars have been debating over what was meant by the expression ?the Son of Man, ? which was used so frequently by the itinerant Rabbi from Nazareth known as Jesus. The expression occurs 81 times in the Gospels, 77 of which come from Jesus (with two additional ones in indirect speech). Despite being used so frequently by Jesus, an explicit explanation is never given in the Gospels (or in any book of the New Testament) as to what Jesus meant by the designation of ?the Son of Man.? Nevertheless, if Jesus did use the term himself as a self-designation, examining it would perhaps allow one to gain more insight into Jesus? self-understanding.
