Showbiz. A word that simply sums up glamour – with a large-sized capital G. Here is all that glitz in the story of two songwriters – a musician and a lyricist – who meet, start to work together, have a small success, then get ‘conned’ into writing a big musical show. The two are composers – one a young, serious Australian dedicated to writing music ‘in the old-fashioned way’, and the other an English lyricist with an apparently couldn’t-care-less attitude but nevertheless in love with writing words to music. Set vaguely just after the Swinging Sixties, they live in a world where amusement and entertainment are centred around live stage shows, big screen films or early days television. It is a world before social media takes control – where people talk to each other rather than into a piece of electronic equipment and listen to music on vinyl discs or the more modern tapes or discs. It is a world of mysterious allure and dreams, and the two songsters fit into it perfectly. They slot into the alluring fascination of preparing a London West End musical, and the readers can follow their exciting, enchanting journey as they make their initial recording and then help develop, rehearse and stage the show.

In the mid-nineteenth century the United States was musically vibrant. Rising industrialization, a growing middle class, and increasing concern for the founding of American centers of art created a culture that was rich in musical capital. Beyond its importance to the people who created and played it is the fact that this music still influences our culture today. Although numerous academic resources examine the music and musicians of the Civil War era, the research is spread across a variety of disciplines and is found in a wide array of scholarly journals, books, and papers. It is difficult to assimilate this diverse body of research, and few sources are dedicated solely to a rigorous and comprehensive investigation of the music and the musicians of this era. This anthology, which grew out of the first two National Conferences on Music of the Civil War Era, is an initial attempt to address that need. Those conferences established the first academic setting solely devoted to exploring the effects of the Civil War on music and musicians. Bridging musicology and history, these essays represent the forefront of scholarship in music of the Civil War era. Each one makes a significant contribution to research in the music of this era and will ultimately encourage more interdisciplinary research on a subject that has relevance both for its own time and for ours. The result is a readable, understandable volume on one of the few understudied—yet fascinating—aspects of the Civil War era.

Sonic Identity At The Margins written by Joanna Love and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-13 with Music categories.

Sonic Identity at the Margins convenes the interdisciplinary work of 17 academics, composers, and performers to examine sonic identity from the 19th century to the present. Recognizing the myriad aspects of identity formation, the authors in this volume adopt methodological approaches that range from personal accounts and embodied expression to archival research and hermeneutic interpretation. They examine real and imagined spaces-from video games and monument sites to films and depictions of outer space-by focusing on sonic creation, performance, and reception. Drawing broadly from artistic and performance disciplines, the authors reimagine the roles played by music and sound in constructing notions of identity in a broad array of musical experiences, from anti-slavery songsters to Indigenous tunes and soundscapes, noise and multimedia to popular music and symphonic works. Exploring relationships between sound and various markers of identity-including race, gender, ability, and nationality-the authors explore challenging, timely topics, including the legacies of slavery, indigeneity, immigration, and colonial expansion. In heeding recent calls to decolonize music studies and confront its hegemonic methods, the authors interrogate privileged perspectives embedded in creating, performing, and listening to sound, as well as the approaches used to analyze these experiences.
