This book is the first theoretical study of sound-symbolic expressions in Japanese commonly known as mimetic words. It identifies stringent linguistic constraints on these expressions and demonstrates that they form an intricate linguistic system rather than a collection of ad hoc expressions. It then carefully identifies the sound-symbolic meanings of sound units so as to make the elusive meaning of each sound-symbolic expression fully comprehensible. In addition, this book describes a number of interesting facts about the history of the Japanese language which mimetic words reveal.

From the authors of the best-selling Japanese for Busy People series comes an innovative, engaging new way to learn Japanese. Based on a teaching approach which has been used successfully in the classroom by AJALT in Japan, Wadaiko immerses students in the sounds and rhythms of the Japanese language through songs, poetry, tongue twisters, and other word games. The purpose is to get learners to "feel" Japanese, to absorb it with the ears, without being expected to understand it all. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 is made up of five lessons, and Part 2 of four "seasons." Color illustrations and photographs appear on almost every page. Romanized Japanese is used as an aid for those who haven’t learned the writing yet; English translations of the songs and poems are also shown, but otherwise the text is in Japanese. There are exercises and questions, quizzes, and other interactive features. A free CD contains audio of Japanese folk songs that students can sing along with. Wadaiko has been designed with the National Standards for Foreign Language Education in mind.

This book gives true characters of Japanese speech sounds in reference to European speech sounds. When it was first published in 1931, it was the first book of its kind. There are only 5 Japanese vowel elements as opposed to 18 in English, 13 in French and 8 in German. There are 15 Japanese consonants, 26 in English, 22 in French & 23 in German. Because of the lesser number of elements, it follows that the wider range in vowels and consonants is heard by Japanese ears, so this volume gives average sounds uttered by Japanese in the twentieth century in relation to the English sounds.

The model of English that should be used in classrooms has long been a subject of debate. This book (with an accompanying audio CD) describes selected varieties of World Englishes, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of selecting a particular variety from the point of view of both teachers and learners. It aims to examine and re-evaluate concepts such as 'standard', 'variety', 'native speaker' and 'non-native speaker', and to validate the role played by multilingual and multicultural English language teachers, arguing that context and learner needs should determine the variety to be taught.
