Created by NASA for high school students interested in space science, this collection of worked problems covers a broad range of subjects, including mathematical aspects of NASA missions, computation and measurement, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry, matrix algebra, conic sections, and calculus. In addition to enhancing mathematical knowledge and skills, these problems promote an appreciation of aerospace technology and offer valuable insights into the practical uses of secondary school mathematics by professional scientists and engineers. Geared toward high school students and teachers, this volume also serves as a fine review for undergraduate science and engineering majors. Numerous figures illuminate the text, and an appendix explores the advanced topic of gravitational forces and the conic section trajectories.

The space C(X) of all continuous functions on a compact space X carries the structure of a normed vector space, an algebra and a lattice. On the one hand we study the relations between these structures and the topology of X, on the other hand we discuss a number of classical results according to which an algebra or a vector lattice can be represented as a C(X). Various applications of these theorems are given. Some attention is devoted to related theorems, e.g. the Stone Theorem for Boolean algebras and the Riesz Representation Theorem. The book is functional analytic in character. It does not presuppose much knowledge of functional analysis; it contains introductions into subjects such as the weak topology, vector lattices and (some) integration theory.

A fascinating exploration of the correlation between geometry and linear algebra, this text portrays the former as a subject better understood by the use and development of the latter rather than as an independent field. The treatment offers elementary explanations of the role of geometry in other branches of math and science — including physics, analysis, and group theory — as well as its value in understanding probability, determinant theory, and function spaces. Outstanding features of this volume include discussions of systematic geometric motivations in vector space theory and matrix theory; the use of the center of mass in geometry, with an introduction to barycentric coordinates; axiomatic development of determinants in a chapter dealing with area and volume; and a careful consideration of the particle problem. Students and other mathematically inclined readers will find that this inquiry into the interplay between geometry and other areas offers an enriched appreciation of both subjects.

Maintaining the standard of excellence set by the previous edition, this textbook covers the basic geometry of two- and three-dimensional spaces Written by a master expositor, leading researcher in the field, and MacArthur Fellow, it includes experiments to determine the true shape of the universe and contains illustrated examples and engaging exercises that teach mind-expanding ideas in an intuitive and informal way. Bridging the gap from geometry to the latest work in observational cosmology, the book illustrates the connection between geometry and the behavior of the physical universe and explains how radiation remaining from the big bang may reveal the actual shape of the universe.

The aim of Summable Spaces and Their Duals, Matrix Transformations and Geometric Properties is to discuss primarily about different kinds of summable spaces, compute their duals and then characterize several matrix classes transforming one summable space into other. The book also discusses several geometric properties of summable spaces, as well as dealing with the construction of summable spaces using Orlicz functions, and explores several structural properties of such spaces. Each chapter contains a conclusion section highlighting the importance of results, and points the reader in the direction of possible new ideas for further study. Features Suitable for graduate schools, graduate students, researchers and faculty, and could be used as a key text for special Analysis seminars Investigates different types of summable spaces and computes their duals Characterizes several matrix classes transforming one summable space into other Discusses several geometric properties of summable spaces Examines several possible generalizations of Orlicz sequence spaces

Analysis In Vector Spaces written by Mustafa A. Akcoglu and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-09 with Mathematics categories.

A rigorous introduction to calculus in vector spaces The concepts and theorems of advanced calculus combined withrelated computational methods are essential to understanding nearlyall areas of quantitative science. Analysis in Vector Spacespresents the central results of this classic subject throughrigorous arguments, discussions, and examples. The book aims tocultivate not only knowledge of the major theoretical results, butalso the geometric intuition needed for both mathematicalproblem-solving and modeling in the formal sciences. The authors begin with an outline of key concepts, terminology, and notation and also provide a basic introduction to set theory, the properties of real numbers, and a review of linear algebra. Anelegant approach to eigenvector problems and the spectral theoremsets the stage for later results on volume and integration.Subsequent chapters present the major results of differential andintegral calculus of several variables as well as the theory ofmanifolds. Additional topical coverage includes: Sets and functions Real numbers Vector functions Normed vector spaces First- and higher-order derivatives Diffeomorphisms and manifolds Multiple integrals Integration on manifolds Stokes' theorem Basic point set topology Numerous examples and exercises are provided in each chapter toreinforce new concepts and to illustrate how results can be appliedto additional problems. Furthermore, proofs and examples arepresented in a clear style that emphasizes the underlying intuitiveideas. Counterexamples are provided throughout the book to warnagainst possible mistakes, and extensive appendices outline theconstruction of real numbers, include a fundamental result aboutdimension, and present general results about determinants. Assuming only a fundamental understanding of linear algebra andsingle variable calculus, Analysis in Vector Spaces is anexcellent book for a second course in analysis for mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering majors at theundergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves as a valuablereference for further study in any discipline that requires a firmunderstanding of mathematical techniques and concepts.
