In 1843, an Oxford University professor reported to British academics and agriculturalists on a deposit of phosphorite he had visited in Logrosan, Extremadura, Spain. A mineral much in demand by manure manufacturers, once crushed, it was dissolved in sulphuric acid to produce superphosphate, the world's first artifical chemical manure. Once the railway between Madrid and Lisbon was constructed in the 1860s, the industry took off. Although competition from cheaper overseas phosphates caused many of the phosphate companies to go out of business in the 1890s, demand from Spanish superphosphate manufacturers ensured the industry's survival until the mid-1900s. Today, with the assistance of EU funding, a number of these mines have been developed as tourist attractions as part of Spain's geo-mining heritage. Bernard O'Connor and Leyre Solano's book investigates the origins, development and eventual decline of the Spanish phosphate industry.

WATRIAMA AND CO (the title echoes Kipling's STALKY AND CO!) is a collection of biographical essays about people associated with the Pacific Islands. It covers a period of almost a century and a half. However, the individual stories of first-hand experience converge to some extent in various ways so as to present a broadly coherent picture of 'Pacific History'. In this, politics, economics and religion overlap. So, too, do indigenous cultures and concerns; together with the activities and interests of the Europeans who ventured into the Pacific and who had a profound, widespread and enduring impact there from the nineteenth century, and who also prompted reactions from the Island peoples. Not least significant in this process is the fact that the Europeans generated a 'paper trail' through which their stories and those of the Islanders (who also contributed to their written record) can be known. Nauru is a small island in the Pacific which was endowed by nature with some of the richest phosphates in the world. Phosphate mining began on the island in 1906, when Nauru was still part of the German empire. Following Germany's defeat in 1918, Nauru was entrusted by the League of Nations to the care of the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. It was a fiduciary relationship which, after the Second World War, continued under the trusteeship system of the United Nations. During this period Nauru's idyllic landscape was disastrously transformed, reducing much of the island to a lunar waste fringed in tropical splendour. Nauru: Environmental Damage under International Trusteeship summarizes part of the ten-volume 'Report of the Commission of Inquiry on the Rehabilitation of Phosphate Lands in Nauru', which was presented to the Government of Nauru in 1988. The report covered the responsibilities of the powers which controlled Nauru for rehabilitation of the lands which had been devastated by phosphate mining. It also inquired into the feasibility and manner of rehabilitation. Professor Christopher Weeramantry, the Chairman of the Commission, has written a fascinating and accessible summary of the portion of the report dealing with international responsibility. The issues include a number of areas of international law relating to mandate and trusteeship, environmental law, abuse of power, unjust enrichment, acquired rights, and permanent sovereignty over natural resources. Nauru is probably the most detailed practical study of an international mandate and trusteeship ever written. The issues explored in the book are of far-reaching importance. The story of Nauru has a significancereaching well beyond the tiny coral island.
