Few stories capture the unique interplay of critical theory, mass media and public taste better than the story of the Spasmodics. These earnest, youthful and largely self-educated neo-Romantics hoped to become prophets who would influence literary society on a grand scale. From about 1850 to 1860, the Spasmodics successfully cast a long shadow over virtually every serious discussion of Victorian poetry. Many mid-nineteenth-century writers, including Tennyson, both Brownings and Matthew Arnold, were either adherents or outspoken detractors of the Spasmodic School. This work documents, in appropriate social contexts, the trajectory of the Spasmodic School in both its original incarnation and subsequent appraisals. Examining the various personalities and aesthetic principles that fashioned the movement, the author does not champion any particular critical stance or verdict. The scholarly apparatus cites a number of competing Victorianist interpretations, approaches and judgments with varying degrees of expertise.

What is it that makes most of us resist change? In this book, Martha Westwater takes her readers through the tumultuous times after Vatican II, when centuries-old assumptions about what constituted holiness were challenged. The churchs call for renewal invited women religious to discover again the roots of their call and the urgency of the needs of that time. Martha shares how she and the sisters with whom she lives seek to move into the future with integrity and passion. Perhaps in every life there is a single moment of insight that defines the souls journey more than any other. For Martha, it occurred on October 9, 1997. The twist of fate that allowed Martha to survive a horrific car crash while her two companions died gnawed at her as she wrestled with every survivors question: Why me? Why did I live? You will discover that the answer is something only the one who asks the question can articulate. More than Enough: Seeing Change as Blessing challenges each of us to reflect on our own life and recognize that we have always had enough of what we need for happiness. The author uses both wisdom and wit to explore how God accompanies us through every change and uses them to bless our lifes journey.

Pre-Raphaelitism's influence during the long nineteenth century was far-reaching, affecting artistic and literary thought in places, media, and times far removed from its origins in 1848 London. Worldwide Pre-Raphaelitism examines the movement's development beyond England, from the continental "immortals" glorified by the nascent Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood to later reactions against and in sympathy with the ideals of the movement after it had ended. This collection of essays by art historians, literary critics, fashion historians, women's studies scholars, and independent researchers from around the world enhances our understanding of the global impact of Pre-Raphaelitism on the art-historical and literary developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
