Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... dark brown, on each side; the first begins on the front edge of the fifth segment on a line with the spiracles, and passing obliquely up and back, crosses this segment and the greater part of the sixth. The second stripe begins at the wime place on the sixth segment and crosses this and the greater part of the next, and so on with the rest, the seventh and last ending at the base of the caudal horn. The last segment is edged with white, and there are minute circular white dots edged with purplish brown, each with a minute hair, scattered over the upper surface of the body, especially on the anterior segments. The caudal horn, somewhat curved backward, is reddish or bluish and white on the sides, and studded with short black spines, or the whole horn is sometimes black. At maturity the larva descends into the ground where it transforms into a dark reddish brown pupa with a detached cylindrical tongue-case bent like a jug handle, but not so much arched nor so long as that of P. celeus. It is somewhat swollen or bulbous at the end where it is applied to the body not quite half way to the end of the wing cases. They feed on the leaves of the Tomato and Tobacco plants, and at times do a great deal of damage. They also feed on Jamestown weed (Datura stramonium.) 12. Phlegethontius Celeus, Htibner. Phley-e-thon'-ti-iu cif-le-iis. the potato-worm or tomato-worm. Expanse of wings, from four to five inches. The whole surface of the body and wings above and beneath is ashy gray. The top of the thorax is tinged with brownish and has several short transverse black lines on the prothorax, one along the edge of the patagiae and another through the middle of it, of the same color. The metathoracic tufts are bluish, and followed by a large black patch...

The term 'dispersal centre' literally refers to the place from which a dispersal process started. However, it also implies the location of a centre of diversity, frequently even a recent one, as well as the location of a preservation centre or refuge during regressive phases in less remoted periods of earth's history, and that of a possible speciation centre. The latter may have been the place of differentia tion of subspecies, or species, provided that the isolation period has been suffi ciently long. The term deliberately brings the dynamics to prominence which is inherent in the process of dispersal. This dynamics is neither properly recognized when considering ranges 'whose recent structures more or less force us to consider them ,as static entities' (DE LATTIN 1967, p. 16)*, nor adequately taken into account by systematic typology. Yet, it is, in fact, the change that takes place in a range, which is of great significance in evolutionary genetics. In the case of range regressions which may lead to a diminution or rupture of the range pattern according to the pressure of the endogenous or exogenous triggering factors, subsequently arising distribution obstacles may result in a geographical isolation of partial populations or popula tion parts. Their sufficiently long spatial and reproductive isolation and the allele loss resulting from the change of the population size promote a divergent develop ment.

Hawkmoths are large charismatic insects with highly variable and colourful larvae. Some species are specialised in their habitat preferences, but others are widespread and often encountered in gardens. However, little is known about most species, and associating the adults with their larvae has previously been difficult or impossible. Hawkmoths of Australia allows identification of all of the Australian hawkmoths for the first time and treats species found on mainland Australia, Tasmania and all offshore islands within Australian limits. It presents previously undescribed life histories of nearly all species and provides a comprehensive account of hawkmoth biology, including new parasitoids and their hawkmoth hosts. Detailed drawings and photographs show the external and internal morphology of adults and immatures, and eggs, larval instars and pupa. Keys are provided for last instar larvae and pupae of the 71 species that the authors have reared. The book is concluded by a glossary, appendices to parasitoids and larval foodplants, an extensive reference list with bibliographical notes and a comprehensive index. The wealth of new information in this book makes it an essential reference for anyone interested in these moths. Hawkmoths of Australia is Volume 13 of the Monographs on Australian Lepidoptera Series.

Hawk Moths Of Jamaica written by Thomas W. Turner and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-19 with Science categories.

Jamaica was initially one of a few locations in the New World where early collections of hawk moths were made by visiting naturalists including Sir Hans Sloane, Philip Gosse, and natural history illustrator Luke Robins. From this material several species of hawk moths, new to science, were first described by Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778), Dru Drury (1724-1803), Johan Phillip Fabricius (1745-1808) and others. In the subsequent centuries the known number of Jamaican hawk moth species has gradually grown with new records noted in individual descriptions or in species lists. However, there has been no single illustrated publication specifically devoted to Jamaica’s hawk moths. Our book, “Hawk Moths of Jamaica”, for the first time provides photographs, descriptions, and distribution maps of all species recorded from the island.
