Ralph Gibson has carried on a lifelong love affair with France, passionately observing and recording the country's character through its most intimate details. Now, in The Spirit of Burgundy, the photographer gives us his unforgettable chronicle of a year in one of France's most culturally rich and visually stunning regions. A woman's profile, fleetingly glimpsed; the rugged tapestry of vineyards and the chance combination of colors at a Dijon festival; gleaming necklaces and the heel of a shoe; the shape of a wine bottle and the sensuous pattern of lace curtains - the images in The Spirit of Burgundy capture the essence of their setting. In 86 color and 68 black-and-white duotone photographs, Gibson celebrates Burgundy. Local cuisine, architecture, customs, wine cultivation, landscape, and the Burgundians themselves are ongoing visual themes that produce a witty portrait: sensual but never sentimental, both stark and lush, earthy and enigmatic.

The Cte d'Or may be small in size but its influence is huge and it can strike terror into the heart of even the most seasoned wine professionals. The Cte d'Or is located in the very heart of Burgundy and stretches for a narrow 35-mile band. It's on this terroir that some of the world's best known wines are produced. There are two main sections. The Cte de Nuits, named after the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, is a mere one mile by 12 miles but it's home to 24 Grand Cru vineyards and some of the world's most expensive vineyard real estate. This is the northernmost region, starting just south of Dijon and running to Courgoloin, a few kilometres south of Nuits-Saint-Georges and it grows mainly Pinot Noir and other red grapes. It is responsible for some of the great names of French wine, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune itself. The second part, the southerly Cte de Beaune, is well-known for its whites but actually grows both Chardonnay and red grapes. One of the most famous villages in the Cte de Beaune is Pommard, known for its heavy, full-bodied reds. It's an intimidating terroir but Raymond Blake's companionable Cte d'Orshows clearly how illusory those confusing labyrinths are. There is hardly another wine region where knowledge of the back-story is so critical to understanding the wine, for it is impossible to understand burgundy without reference to the place it comes from and the people who make it. Cte d'Ortells the whole story of Burgundy and paints a complete picture of life there: the history, the culture, the people, the place, the geography and the climate. Blake transports the reader to the heart of Burgundy.

Written by an expert of the ins and outs of viticulture in Burgundy and many other areas of the world, this new volume showcases the wine-growing culture of Burgundy. Sustainable Viticulture: The Vines and Wines of Burgundy covers the rich history and culture of the wine growing tradition of the region. The author, who has worked as a viticulturist in Burgundy, Switzerland, Germany, California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, tells the epic story of Burgundy, a 2000-year adventure with its ups and downs. The oldest vineyard discovered by archaeologists dates back to the first century A.D. By the third century, Burgundy wines were already famous in the Roman Empire. Burgundy was a powerful state in the 15th century, which was also a golden age for its viticulture. The book covers: the red and white cultivars that are to be found in Burgundy the Appellations Contrôlées system the tasks the wine grower performs during the year the social life of wine growers the scourges the wine grower fears how religion has played at part in the history of viticulture the factors that contributed to making Burgundy wines famous what new challenges growers are facing today In this entertaining and informative book, the author’s approach to viticulture reconciles the present, the past, and the future. The volume will appeal to wine buffs as much as it does to readers who wish to learn about viticulture. It's a serious book that doesn't take itself seriously.

Burgundy written by Marion Demossier and has been published by Berghahn Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-23 with Social Science categories.

“Demossier’s engrossing analysis of Burgundy—the wine, the place, the brand—should be imbibed (pun intended!) on many levels—and slowly, for best appreciation.”—foodanthro.com Drawing on more than twenty years of fieldwork, this book explores the professional, social, and cultural world of Burgundy wines, the role of terroir (the environmental factors that affect a crop's character), and its transnational deployment in China, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand. It demystifies the terroir ideology by providing a unique long-term ethnographic analysis of what lies behind the concept. While the Burgundian model of terroir has gone global by acquiring UNESCO world heritage status, its very legitimacy is now being challenged amongst the vineyards where it first took root. From the introduction: Superficially then, Burgundy might appear to be simply acquiring recognition for its unchanging landscape, tradition and culture. Yet, for all the power of its rich local identity, folklore and culture which is broadcast to the world, there hides underneath the comforting blanket of this seamless place, untouched by change or conflict, a far more complex reality. Burgundy’s listing as a World Heritage landscape emphasises its international reputation as a traditional and historical site of wine production and opens a new chapter in the production and marketing of its quality, differentiation and authenticity. It is also about readjusting Burgundy and the grands crus in response to a changing global market and the shifting kaleidoscope of world wine values.

My Favorite Burgundies written by Clive Coates and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-07 with Cooking categories.

"My Favorite Burgundies is a more personal follow-up to--but not a comprehensive revision of--Coates' The Wines of Burgundy (California, 2008). The book is based on the author's many subsequent tastings and travels through the region since the publication of his last book five years ago. Chapter 1 includes descriptions of Burgundy's most renowned vineyards, including their particular history, geography, and soil conditions, as well as tasting notes of various producer's single-bottle offerings from these sites. Chapter 2 describes the region's most distinguished domaines, with Coates impressions of the proprietors, facilities, and wine-making philosophies, along with vertical tasting notes (in some cases, stretching back more than thirty years). Chapter 3 provides current vintage assessments of Chablis from 2008-2010, Coates' highly sought-after "Three Years On" and "Ten Years On" tastings, assessing wines from between 1990-2002. All tastings are accompanied by the author's personal notes, ratings, and suggested drinking dates. Interspersed throughout are a brief series of "observations" on a variety of hot-button issues in the wine world, from the utility of blind tasting and tasting notes to biodynamics and other philosophies of viticulture"--
