In 1915 on a rugged beach in south-western Turkey, young soldiers fighting for their countries forged what we now know at the Anzac spirit. The mateship, loyalty and courage they displayed in the trenches formed the bedrock of the Australian and New Zealand national characters. In 'The Spirit of Gallipoli', bestselling author Patrick Lindsay examines this momentous conflict, bringing to life the heroes and the villians; the tragedy and the glory. In his simple yet powerful retelling, Lindsay shows that our understanding of the Anzac spirit can only be complete once we understand the spirit of Gallipoli.

The Spirit of Kokoda celebrates the remarkable achievements of the Australian Diggers who fought battles along one of the most difficult pieces of terrain on earth. This revised edition contains a new intro and foreword, a 'virtual trek' and more photos. 1942 was the year that Australia lost its innocence. By the time the Diggers faced the Japanese invaders in Papua New Guinea, any impartial observer would surely have concluded the Allies had already lost the war. By mid-1942,the Japanese conquests had far exceeded Hitler's, controlling a part of the world three times the size of Europe and the US combined. They were, literally, at Australia's doorstep. Most of the soldiers on the Kokoda Track were about 18 years old, and most had never held a gun, let alone fired a shot. Outnumbered six to one, they nonetheless managed to force the Japanese to 'advance to the rear'- the Japanese do not have a word for 'retreat'. The Sydney Swans use the Track as part of a mentorship program, and to help lend some structure to their young players' lives. The book contains accounts by the Swans who have done the trek.

From 25 April 1915 to 9 January 1916, troops from Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Turkey engaged in a bitter struggle for the Gallipoli peninsula. The Allied forces wanted to forge a passage through the Dardanelles in order to create a sea route to Russia and capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople. Despite having more troops and being better supplied, the Allies suffered devastating losses in the face of the brave and resourceful Turks. Gallipoli tells the story of this campaign in a unique and comprehensive manner, through three authors who expertly describe their country's role and the impact the conflict had. For the Turks it was a defining moment in their history, becoming the basis of the Turkish War of Independence, for the British it was almost the downfall of Winston Churchill and for the ANZACs Gallipoli was the birthplace of the ANZAC spirit. With evocative illustrations, comprehensive descriptions of events, incredible stories, and rare and newly researched removable documents and memorabilia of historic importance, Gallipoli is the ultimate commemoration of the battle.

An Aussie soldier's diary of the first World War - by turns compelling, illuminating, funny, touching and sad - and absolutely unputdownable. Archie Albert Barwick was an enthusiastic young 24 year old when he joined the First AIF in late August 1914 - his service number was 914. When he learnt that he'd been accepted into the army, he was so happy he turned two somersaults for pure joy. this is his diary, that he kept throughout the war - from Cairo to Gallipoli, from Marseilles through to the terrible winter of 1916 in the Somme, from Ypres to Pozieres. He was wounded three times and sent back to the fighting, before finally travelling back home in December 1918.this diary is simply a treasure - vivid, alive, compelling. His description of the war is by turns down-to-earth, horrifying, illuminating, funny, touching and terribly sad. Yet his voice and personality shine through. In his diary, Archie describes someone as being 'merry & bright & never downhearted' and this could be a description of Archie himself. Readable, spirited and humming with life, In Great Spirits is a unique and incredibly moving tribute to the Australian character and the ANZAC spirit.
