This title was first published in 2000: These essays ecplore the spiritual culture shared by texts and writers in Western Europe from the 13th to 17th centuries; the visionaries, mystics and nuns who were poets or scholars and the creative writers who drew on spiritual themes. The topics range chronologically from the late 13th to late 17th centuries and geographically from Germany, England, Italy, France, Spain and New Spain (Mexico), though the volume's centre is the spiritual culture of 16th-century Spain. Common concerns of each essay are the exploration of spiritual culture; how some texts and writers shape expectations attending the life of the spirit; and how they are in turn shaped by them. The sub-themes many of the essays share are the gendering of spiritual culture and the relationship between traditional literary genres like poetry and drama and spiritual discourse. Each text or spiritual figure covered here has a distinctive spiritual voice - a mystical gesture - that contributes an individual mysticism to the common spiritual culture they all share. Each scholar in her or his own way defines this mystical gesture. The essays analyze Mechthild von Magdburg, "Piers Plowman", "The Second Shepherds' Play", Catherine of Siena, Bernardo de Laredo, Teresa of Avila, Alonso de la Fuente, Luisa de Carvajal y Mendoza, Cecilian de nacimiento, Margaret Mary Alaconque and Sor Juana.

Gesture And Power written by Yolanda Covington-Ward and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-02 with Social Science categories.

In Gesture and Power Yolanda Covington-Ward examines the everyday embodied practices and performances of the BisiKongo people of the Lower Congo to show how their gestures, dances, and spirituality are critical in mobilizing social and political action. Conceiving of the body as the center of analysis, a catalyst for social action, and as a conduit for the social construction of reality, Covington-Ward focuses on specific flash points in the last ninety years of Congo's troubled history, when embodied performance was used to stake political claims, foster dissent, and enforce power. In the 1920s Simon Kimbangu started a Christian prophetic movement based on spirit-induced trembling, which swept through the Lower Congo, subverting Belgian colonial authority. Following independence, dictator Mobutu Sese Seko required citizens to dance and sing nationalist songs daily as a means of maintaining political control. More recently, embodied performance has again stoked reform, as nationalist groups such as Bundu dia Kongo advocate for a return to precolonial religious practices and non-Western gestures such as traditional greetings. In exploring these embodied expressions of Congolese agency, Covington-Ward provides a framework for understanding how embodied practices transmit social values, identities, and cultural history throughout Africa and the diaspora.

A Gesture Through Time written by Elizabeth Ruth Block and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Fiction categories.

Fiction. Elizabeth Block's debut novel, A GESTURE THROUGH TIME (written under fiscal sponsorshipof Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco, selected as a 1997 Heekin Foundation firstnovel fellowship finalist, short-listed with an honorable mention for the 2004 Starcheronefiction prize, and the recipient of a Djerassi Resident Artists Program Tread of Angelsfellowship) is one of the most inventive narratives in contemporary literature. "Elizabeth Block's A GESTURE THROUGH TIME is a novel for the new millennium. Deft and funny and wise, it examines authorship, narration, technology, love, and memory, and asks most playfully what it means to tell a story. Always inventing and bravely trying out new strategies, she puts most writers and their sorry pretenses of invention to shame. In the spirit of Stern's Tristram Shandy, A GESTURE THROUGH TIME captures the relation of muse and amuse, taking the reader on a spirited, pleasure-filled journey"--Maxine Chernoff.

Karel Appel A Gesture Of Colour written by Jean-François Lyotard and has been published by Leuven University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

"Karel Appel. A gesture of colour is the first of a series of five volumes, bringing together the most important writings of Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) on contemporary art and artists. The book he devoted to the art of Karel Appel (1921-2006) is without doubt one of the most complete and inspired texts of all the writing included in the series. Neither the original French manuscript nor the English translation has ever been published before, and their presentation face to face should constitute a considerable plus. In this book, Lyotard presents Karel Appel's "matterism" as an offer of presence, presence deferred -- it is the visual where every predicate is suspended, the visual touched, "gesture" of colour more than property of colour, appearance at the edge of the abyss. Christine Buci-Glucksmann's epilogue situates Karel Appel. A gesture of colour within the whole of Lyotard's writings on art and his subsequent work."--P. [4] of cover.

It also deals with numerous issues important for any semiotics of gesture, such as the question of the relationship between physical forms and meaning, the problem of how to present a description of the gestural repertoire of a community in a consistent manner, the importance of context for the interpretation of gesture, how gestures may be combined, and how they develop as metaphorical expressions."--Jacket.

A Gesture Life written by Chang-rae Lee and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-10-01 with Fiction categories.

The second novel from the critically acclaimed New York Times–bestselling author Chang-rae Lee. His remarkable debut novel was called "rapturous" (The New York Times Book Review), "revelatory" (Vogue), and "wholly innovative" (Kirkus Reviews). It was the recipient of six major awards, including the prestigious Hemingway Foundation/PEN award. Now Chang-rae Lee has written a powerful and beautifully crafted second novel that leaves no doubt about the extraordinary depth and range of his talent. A Gesture Life is the story of a proper man, an upstanding citizen who has come to epitomize the decorous values of his New York suburban town. Courteous, honest, hardworking, and impenetrable, Franklin Hata, a Japanese man of Korean birth, is careful never to overstep his boundaries and to make his neighbors comfortable in his presence. Yet as his story unfolds, precipitated by the small events surrounding him, we see his life begin to unravel. Gradually we learn the mystery that has shaped the core of his being: his terrible, forbidden love for a young Korean Comfort Woman when he served as a medic in the Japanese army during World War II. In A Gesture Life, Chang-rae Lee leads us with dazzling control through a taut, suspenseful story about love, family, and community—and the secrets we harbor. As in Native Speaker, he writes of the ways outsiders conform in order to survive and the price they pay for doing so. It is a haunting, breathtaking display of talent by an acclaimed young author.
