True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture was first published in 1841, when Pugin was 29 years old. Here he presents coherent arguments for the revival of the Gothic style, the case for which he had made pictorally in his sensational book Contrasts (1836). For Pugin, the Gothic Revival was 'not a style, but a principle' and this he laid down in his most influential architectural treatise, True Principles, which introduced functionalist and rationalist as well as moral criteria into architectural discourse, much of it still resonant in the twentieth-century Modern Movement. It is reprinted together with his Apology for the Revival of Christian Architecture, first printed in 1843. Much of his thought here is on architectural education, and in shuffling off the straitjacket of neoclassical architectural principles Pugin exercised a great influence in mid-Victorian architecture and the applied arts, and in a wider design reform movement. These two seminal books, presented in one volume, are introduced by the architectural historian and Pugin authority Dr Roderick O'Donnell

In this illuminating book, esteemed art historian Otto Georg von Simson explores how Gothic architecture is an expression of supernatural reality, and shows how, to those who designed and worshipped in the great cathedrals of France in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, this symbolic function of sacred architecture overshadowed all others. The Gothic Cathedral takes readers from the birth of the Gothic style with the Basilica of St.-Denis to the consummation of the form in the majestic Cathedral of Chartres, revealing how these incomparable architectural masterpieces embodied the spiritual and intellectual order of the medieval world.

"What makes the great Gothic cathedrals and churches the most beautiful and awe-inspiring buildings in the Western world? As in his earlier award-winning study Dante the Maker, William Anderson employs his eye as a poet and a scholar to seek the answer in the nature of the creative imagination. Here he explores creativity on the grand scale of civilization. The book is based on the idea that every civilization is founded on a new ideal of man. In the case of the Gothic masters, they were the first artists to give visual form to the Christian idea of the worth of the individual soul. Their view of man - related to the deepest religious and philosophical ideas of the time - appears not only in the marvelous sculptures of Chartres and other churches but also in the new spatial effects they created using the pointed arch and soaring vaults. Gothic civilization first blossomed in the region around Paris between 1135 and 1150 in the new style of architecture, sculpture, and stained glass at St-Denis, Sens, and Chartres. The style and themes developed there were to spread as far as Poland, the west of Ireland, Scandinavia, Southern Italy, and the Middle East, and continued to generate masterpieces for some four hundred years. Through their supreme mastery of applied geometry and the engineering skills of the age, the Gothic masters were among the founders of later Western supremacy in science and technology. Through their daring constructions in stone, wood, and glass they demonstrated through the means of art the beneficent power man can exert over matter and his environment. Their works transcend their age, for they speak as forcefully to us today as to those who first saw them. Word and image (for the pictures by photographer and architect Clive Hicks complement the text exactly) give us an insight into the Gothic mind and enable us not only to see the Gothic cathedrals with new eyes but also to rediscover standards by which to judge our present state of civilization." --
