The Spirit and the Flesh explores the themes of grace, redemption, sin and forgiveness that Caffery encountered in this community--of which she has said, I felt incredibly comfortable in a culture rich in celebrations of religious feasts, with strong, independent, highly emotional people, much like the people I grew up with in southwest Louisiana. The brothel brought new elements into my work: secrets, sensual needs, desire and, often, unexpected love. Debbie Fleming Caffery has been making photographs of the people and culture of her native Louisiana for more than 30 years; this is her fourth book.

What does Paul mean by "the flesh"? There is a great deal of confusion among laymen and disagreement among scholars on this issue. Christians know that we are supposed to "walk by the Spirit" so that they will not gratify the desires of the flesh, but it is not entirely clear what these expressions mean. Furthermore, Paul can also be confusing when he addresses the Christian's relationship to the flesh--are we in the flesh or not? This book clarifies these issues for us by exploring the different meanings of "flesh" throughout the Bible, and analyzing the influence both of Old Testament conceptions of "flesh" as well as new salvation-historical realities on Paul's thinking, especially in the context of the controversy over circumcision in Galatians. By carefully following Paul's thought, we will also gain greater insight into other Pauline themes that intersect with his theology of the flesh: new creation and his view of this age and the one to come. Most importantly, we will discover Paul's own program for our spiritual transformation so that we may live a life of Christlike love and service despite the moral weakness of our flesh.

When I learned of this new term, I began strongly supporting the use of this newer term. I believe that people should be able to call themselves whatever they wish, and scholars should respect and acknowledge their change of terminology. I went on record early on in convincing other anthropologists to shift away from use of the word berdache and in favor of using Two-Spirit. Nevertheless, because this book continues to be sold with the use of berdache, many people have assumed that I am resisting the newer term. Nothing could be further from the truth. Unless continued sales of this book will justify the publication of a third revised edition in the future, it is not possible to rewrite what is already printed, Therefore, I urge readers of this book, as well as activists who are working to gain more respect for gender variance, mentally to substitute the term "Two-Spirit" in the place of "berdache" when reading this text. -- Walter L. I am Lei M. Lang, the mother of two wonderful boys, Joshua H. Lang and Jacob L. Lang, from a previous marriage. I have a daughter-in-law named Yetta Lang and four grandkids: Anaya, Raven, Jaylon, and, the youngest, Jordan Lang. I was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, to Julia and David Arnold. My mother went home to be with the Lord on March 12, 2012, and my father is still living at age eighty-two. I have been saved since a teenager and got baptized in Jesus's name at age eight and received the Holy Spirit at age seventeen. I was called to preach at age forty-two and got ordained at age forty-six. I moved from Greenville, South Carolina, to Missouri in 2000, where I joined the Christ Temple Church with Bishop Mark C. Tolbert as my pastor. While there, I attended Faith Bible Study College, getting a bachelor's degree in Christian counseling. I relocated to Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 2009, where I am now a member of the Praise Temple Apostolic Church with Pastor Brown and his wife, First Lady Aquila Brown. In each day of my journey, Jesus Christ is ordering my steps, and I am walking by faith. I am also 100% soul out to God. My mission is to witness as many souls as possible, and to teach the body of Christ how to have the God kind of faith.
