The 'Stan is a collection of short comics about America's longest war. Individual stories highlight different perspectives—one through the eyes of a Taliban ambassador and others through the eyes of Afghan and U.S. Army soldiers—but every account highlights the human element of war. The tales in this book—based on reporting by David Axe and Kevin Knodell and drawn by artist Blue Delliquanti—are all true and took place in roughly the first decade of the U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan. While the stories are from the recent past, The 'Stan is still very much about Afghanistan's and America's present—and likely their future.

Long before his momentous teaming with Oliver Hardy, comedian Stan Laurel (1890-1965) was a motion picture star in his own right. From his film debut in Nuts in May (1917) through his final solo starring effort Should Tall Men Marry? (1928), Laurel headlined dozens of short comedies for a variety of producers and production companies, often playing characters far removed from the meek, dimwitted "Stanley" persona that we know and love. This is a film-by-film look at the pictures Stan made as a solo artist, as well as those he wrote and directed for other stars, shows his development as a movie comedian and filmmaker. Comedy legend Jerry Lewis, a longtime friend and admirer of Stan Laurel, provides an affectionate and eloquent foreword. Included are several rare photographs and production stills.

Based on interviews with Stan Lee and dozens of his colleagues and contemporaries, as well as extensive archival research, this book provides a professional history, an appreciation, and a critical exploration of the face of Marvel Comics. Recognized as a dazzling writer, a skilled editor, a relentless self-promoter, a credit hog, and a huckster, Stan Lee rose from his humble beginnings to ride the wave of the 1940s comic books boom and witness the current motion picture madness and comic industry woes. Included is a complete examination of the rise of Marvel Comics, Lee's work in the years of postwar prosperity, and his efforts in the 1960s to revitalize the medium after it had grown stale.

The Stan Chronicles Low Ray was down to one leg again. When I saw him that morning, leaning against the trashcan down on East 12th Street, it was obvious he was, once again, shy one flipper. "Hey Ray, how's it going?" I asked, planning to walk on by. "Oh great," he said. "Never better. Just...fricking great." He threw me a look as he slid himself down and bounced his backside onto the sidewalk. "Um, did you lose your leg again?" "No, Stan, I'm having it re-chromed and polished so it'll go with my tux when I'm out dancing at the Ritz-fucking-Carlton." He glared at me and slapped his empty pants leg against the garbage can "Sorry man, what happened? Did you leave it somewhere? Can I - " "Couple of goddamn roofers stole it," he said. Another day, and another dose of crazy comes bubbling up from the pavement down on Stan's side of town. The street guys out there are always poking each other with sharp sticks, and Stan, he just can't keep his nose out of it. These are his stories. --------------------- Hammond's first book, From Here to Paris, is a memoir recounting his life changing adventure of getting fired, selling his house, buying a barge in France and taking it to Paris. "When the young VP of HR handed me my termination papers, patted me on the shoulder and said, "Have a nice life." I thought, "Why the hell not?"

Bayesian Statistical Modeling With Stan R And Python written by Kentaro Matsuura and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-24 with Computers categories.

This book provides a highly practical introduction to Bayesian statistical modeling with Stan, which has become the most popular probabilistic programming language. The book is divided into four parts. The first part reviews the theoretical background of modeling and Bayesian inference and presents a modeling workflow that makes modeling more engineering than art. The second part discusses the use of Stan, CmdStanR, and CmdStanPy from the very beginning to basic regression analyses. The third part then introduces a number of probability distributions, nonlinear models, and hierarchical (multilevel) models, which are essential to mastering statistical modeling. It also describes a wide range of frequently used modeling techniques, such as censoring, outliers, missing data, speed-up, and parameter constraints, and discusses how to lead convergence of MCMC. Lastly, the fourth part examines advanced topics for real-world data: longitudinal data analysis, state space models, spatial data analysis, Gaussian processes, Bayesian optimization, dimensionality reduction, model selection, and information criteria, demonstrating that Stan can solve any one of these problems in as little as 30 lines. Using numerous easy-to-understand examples, the book explains key concepts, which continue to be useful when using future versions of Stan and when using other statistical modeling tools. The examples do not require domain knowledge and can be generalized to many fields. The book presents full explanations of code and math formulas, enabling readers to extend models for their own problems. All the code and data are on GitHub.
