In recent decades imaging has proved one of the most rapidly expanding areas of medicine. The present day trainees entering radiology are no longer trained by radiologists who cover and are well informed on most aspects of their specialty as was the case with previous generations. Instead they encounter a confusing array of subspecialists divided both by systems and by techniques. The system specialists include neuroradiologists. vascular radiologists. gastrointestinal radiologists. chest radiologists. and skeletal radiologists. Dr. Dobranowski and his associates are to be highly commended for this excellent manual. I am not aware of a similar text covering the subject. Although all of us perform gastrointestinal studies in a differ ent manner, this text provides an excellent overview. The reader will discover that the text is especially well written and focuses on the important issues relating to GI contrast studies. Because Dr. Steven son's group performs endoscopic procedures, they are included in the manual. These authors are recognized scholars and leaders in gastrointesti nal radiology. Thus, it is easy to understand why the manual is so well done. I am particularly impressed with the emphasis placed on the patient-radiologist relationship before, during, and after completion of a study. All of us who teach gastrointestinal radiology are concerned about the decline in the number of gastrointestinal contrast studies. We are not sure how we can continue to teach our residents the proper tech niques and maintain high-quality teaching programs in gastrointesti nal radiology. A manual of this type is thus timely and appropriate. The manual will be a valuable addition to the library of all radiologists. It will be particularly useful for residents who are learning how to per form GI contrast studies.

The liver blood flow disorders are usually described under the term 'portal hypertension', which is a well known syndrome since it has been widely studied for years from a clinical, radiological and therapeutic point of view. In fact, portal hypertension is only the result of an obstacle to the portal flow, the clinical manifestations of which often occur at a late stage of the disease: bleeding esophageal varices, splenomegaly, ascites. In addition, it is well known that there is not always a precise relationship between the degree of the obstruction, i.e. the decrease of the portal inflow and the level of the portal hypertension. A severe obstruction to the portal flow may therefore sometimes remain clinically inconspicuous for a long time. For this reason improvement of our knowledge of portal hypertension mainly relies on angiographic investigations. Thus, splenoportography permits the discovery of prehepatic obstructions whereas hepa tic venography permitted the recognition of two different types of intrahepatic obstruction according to the pre-sinusoidal or post -sinusoidal site of the obstacle. More recently, arterial hepatic changes could be evidenced through arteriography. However, these angiographic investigations have not yet allowed for all the problems about portal hypertension to be clearly identified.

It is therefore necessary to establish the rich potential of normal and pathological images. By writing this book Dr. Gertrude Maatman has undertaken this task and she has performed it well. In particular, I appreciate the way she has treated the CT-anatomy. All normal structures have been methodically identified. In this way, Dr. Maatman conveys the message of the importance of a sound anatom ical basis, which is the only guarantee of a correct interpretation of pathological cases. This atlas will greatly facilitate description of the precise localization of a lesion and its extension to the surrounding structures.
