It examines the functions metaphorical narratives may attend in order to (de)construct historical identities as well as the places metaphors may occupy in the order of discourses. Divided into three chapters, the dissertation deals with the 'spectacular' and the 'performative' potential of figurative speech assembled in historical narrations that are, in quite distinct fashions, presented in selected novels by Julian Barnes, Graham Swift and Kazuo Ishiguro. The methodological profile of the analysis conducted in this thesis is centralised on the deconstructionist notion of metaphor as well as certain poststructuralist conceptions of power relations. But despite the fact that most theoretical inspirations are drawn from the philosophy of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault there appear also other names and theoretical sources. Among these quite a substantial role can be assigned to literary criticism developed between 1950s and 1990s in Great Britain and elsewhere in Europe, feminist critique along with its various orientations, psychoanalytic writings as well as texts authored by philosophers and critics linked more to structuralist tradition and New Criticism rather than deconstruction such as Paul Ricoeur, Roland Barthes, Mikhail Bakhtin, Wolfgang Iser, Stanley Fish or Walter Benjamin. The first chapter, Metaphoricised Historiography, as its title implies, serves as a short introduction to the intricacies of post-war British history and its impact on literature. Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled The Ends of History: The Novels of Kazuo Ishiguro, Timothy Mo and Graham Swift submitted by Mok Siu Kit for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2005 This thesis is a study of three contemporary historical novels: Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day (1989), Timothy Mo's An Insular Possession (1986), and Graham Swift's Waterland (1983). Unlike traditional historical novels, these works do not take correspondence to the 'real' history as the principal goal and this is not a criterion in which they are assessed. Adopting Linda Hutcheon's formulation of 'historiographic metafiction' in A Poetics of Postmodernism: History, Theory, Fiction (1988) as a starting point, I will attempt to analyse how narrative strategies of the three novels convey the historical moments and more importantly, how they question the authority of recorded history and concepts of traditional historiography. Thematically, the novels are all concerned about a period of the British Empire, although the underlying connection of the chapters is how these works challenge the received version (or the 'grand narrative') of history in their own different ways. Set in 1956, the year of the Suez Crisis, The Remains of the Day is about a long-serving butler in an English country house who reflects upon his service to his late employer, a disgraced Nazi sympathiser, and his present master, a rich American. The stereotypical image of the butler confronts the boundary of 'realistic' representation and questions the assumptions of the historical era associated with the stereotype. The house provides the grounds for a comparison between English and American attitudes towards history. A more violent clash between different cultures is the subject of An Insular Possession. The title refers to the acquisition of Hong Kong as a colony in 1841, the result of the Sino-British conflict known as the Opium War. The novel is made up of newspaper articles, letters and other documents, which offers an opportunity to investigate historians' reliance on documents and the uses and limitations of the archive. The imperial ambition of the British Empire is reflected in the protagonist's family saga in Waterland. Spanning some two hundred years and covering the Victorian era to the contemporary in 1979/80, the novel investigates the tension between the 'grand narrative' of progress and smaller narratives of individuals. The narrative nature of the documents, so extensively elaborated in Timothy Mo's novel, continues to be a relevant issue in Waterland in the guise of the contrast between history (facts) and fairy-tales (fiction). To sum up, this thesis, as a survey of postmodern narrative techniques in exploring the theme of history in postcolonial or postimperial contexts, studies atypical points of view, forms of representing history, the tension between 'grand' and 'small' narratives, as well as relationships between history and historical locations in the three selected novels. This is a postmodernist history of the historical novel with special attention to the political implications of the postmodernist attitude toward the past. Beginning with the poetics of Sir Walter Scott, Wesseling moves via a global survey of 19th century historical fiction to modernist innovations in the genre. Noting how the self-reflexive strategy enables a novelist to represent an episode from the past alongside the process of gathering and formulating historical knowledge, the author discusses the elaboration of this strategy, introduced by novelists such as Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner, in the work of, among others, Julian Barnes, Jay Cantor, Robert Coover and Graham Swift.Wesseling also shows how postmodernist writers attempt to envisage alternative sequences for historical events. Deliberately distorting historical facts, authors of such uchronian fiction, like Thomas Pynchon, Ishmael R. Read, Salman Rushdie and Gunter Grass, imagine what history looks like from the perspective of the losers, rather than the winners.

Accordingly,The Remains of the Dayis a novel about the central figure's character and the change it undergoes in the course of the years. Characterisation plays a very important role in it. The use of diary-like entries for certain stops on Stevens' journey suggest the explicit characterisation of the figure through the first-person narrator. However, the reader is confronted with an unreliable narration that combines homodiegetic and extradiegetic features in regular intervals. Thus the reader cannot fully rely on the statements of the narrator in order to get a picture of his character. What is much more telling is the butler's way of hiding and overlooking things, his not-telling, which characterises him far better and more objectively than his own notion of himself does. Due to the narrative perspective and Stevens' few relations in life4there are not many subsidiary figures who can serve as an additional source describing the butler's traits of character. Nevertheless, there is one figure in the novel which can give information about the former stateandchange of Stevens' character. This figure is Miss Kenton, who has been the housekeeper at Darlington Hall for many years and who developed a relationship to Stevens that can be called the most emotional he had ever had. It is the purpose of this paper to analyse her role in the characterisation of Stevens. However, I want to stress that this paper is not supposed to be a full and exhausting characterisation of the figure of the butler. It is rather intended to deal with the different aspects the figure of Miss Kenton contributes to the characterisation and change of character Stevens undergoes in the course of the novel. This will be done by focussing the following aspects: 1. Miss Kenton's direct statements about Stevens. 2. The relationship between Stevens and the housekeeper and what it tells about Stevens' emotional life. 3. The interaction between the two figures. This aspect will briefly deal with their dialogues and will be combined with the comparison of Stevens' and Miss Kenton's highly contrary natures and what they mean with regard to the revelation of Stevens' character traits. According to these aspects, my analysis will mostly remain on the story-level only. The discourse level might be touched as far as the narrative situation is concerned, since most of the information about Stevens is conveyed through his own narration.
