Excerpt from The Steering Wheel His brows were drawn down in a fierce scowl and a weary droop came to his mouth for a moment; but he Shook it off with a toss of his head and with a dry, throaty chuckle, continued: I wonder if he will stand driving as well as I did. His father was only two years older than I, but land, how he did goad me through a stint of work. I'll not be too hard on the boy, but I'll not stand much nonsense, either. I can't see why it should take four times as long to change from a boy to a man nowadays as it did fifty years ago. He'll have to make a quick job of it. I need him and he has to make good. The trouble is that these rich men's sons are pampered and fussed over until Well, what is it p - to the butler who had entered noiselessly and was standing in a respectful posture. Excerpt from Free Air When the windshield was closed it became so filmed with rain that Claire fancied she was piloting a drowned car in dim spaces under the sea. When it was open, drops jabbed into her eyes and chilled her cheeks. She was excited and thoroughly miserable. She realized that these Minnesota country roads had no respect for her polite experience on Long Island parkways. She felt like a woman, not like a driver. But the Gomez-Dep roadster had seventy horse power, and sang songs. Since she had left Minne-apolis nothing had passed her. Back yonder a truck had tried to crowd her, and she had dropped into a ditch, climbed a bank, returned to the road, and after that the truck was not. Now she was regarding a view more splendid than mountains above a garden by the sea - a stretch of good road. To her passenger, her father, Claire chanted: "Heavenly! There' some gravel. We can make time. We'l hustle on to the next town and get dry." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Country Boy It was more than half an hour since Judge Bel knap's shiny, new automobile had passed, outward bound from Fairview, with Tom Wilson at the steering wheel and the Judge's pretty daughter at his side. If Tom and Jane were taking their usual morning spin around the lake, they were over-due back. Farmer Hemingway knew. He had made it his business to observe their motoring habits. Up the silent valley floated a low rumbling, faint as a distant drum. Farmer Hemingway's weary eyes brightened. By that token he knew that Tom Wilson had thrown out his muffler to take the hill at Speed. The sound came sharper. There was a flash of red along the brown hillside. Farmer Hemingway's loosely hung members assembled themselves for quick action. There was no time to waste, for Tom Wilson was driving furiously. With one swift motion the rickety gate was thrown open. The black pigs looked up in alarm, ready to stand or bolt as his next move should de termine. He flung down the fat, yellow ear on the spot where he had been standing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Six-Cylinder Courtship I don't remember Whether Fate was rated a goddess in the classic literature of yesterday or not. If not, times have changed, for my Fate was a goddess. Bewitchingly slender and petite, with a vivid, alluring face and the nicest eyes in the whole world, she stopped beside the car. And when she asked me a question, I threw in my mental clutch so awkwardly that I seemed, for a moment, to have stripped my transmission-gear of speech. There I sat, like an idiot, my hands on the steering wheel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Classic Speedsters: The Cars, The Times, and The Characters Who Drove Them chronicles the most significant vehicles ever to have traveled American roads and racetracks. Speedsters were the pizzazz cars of their era. Speedsters were owned by entertainers, captains of industry, the wealthy, and in some cases, the everyday guy or gal. They were often expensive, but always fast and sexy. Speedsters were America's first sports cars. Each chapter frames the birth and evolution of a company that produced a speedster model in its lineup and includes a biography of a famous owner of the period. This book traces the journey of the speedster concept across several time periods and among twelve automotive companies. It answers three fundamental questions:· Why were these cars so important and influential?· Why did so many prominent people own them?· What message do they have for modern design?

Excerpt from Driving As has been the case In later days with the bicycle and the automobile, the introduction of coaches in England produced much adverse argument, and many vigorous diatribes were directed against them as tending to obstruct the necessarily narrow ways, to impede traffic and to endanger foot passengers; and the same objections were made to them in America. Still, carriages were in use here as early as 1685, though very rarely, and it is said that as late as 1 772 only thirty-eight private carriages were owned and rarely used - in Philadelphia. The testimony of a traveller (english) in Boston in 1740 was to the effect that chaises and saddle hacks (the saddle animals being all pacers) were plenty; carriages very rare; and that draught labour was mostly performed by oxen. The type Of carriage then in use was rather on the lines of the modern rockaway, holding from six to twelve people on its three or four seats, and entered only from the front by clambering upon the shafts or the splinter-bar and thence crawling over and under the other passengers to one's seat. The calash, the whisky, the chaise, the curricle (the forefathers Of the buggy) were all in use; while the chariot and the coach (on what is now called concord lines) were the favourite four-wheeled vehicles.
