Pre-University Paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, language: English, abstract: The paper analyses the forced removals of Indigenous children in Western Australia from their families in the 20th century. Nowadays, this generation of children has become known as "The Stolen Generation" in Australia. To begin with, the author underlines the importance of "The Stolen Generations" for Australia's history by highlighting the national "sorry day" in 2008 where the Prime Minister officially apologised to the Indigenous People. As a starting point, background information about the situation of Indigenous people in Australia is provided. Moreover, racial theories and ideologies that were prevalent in the 20th century are discussed. The relevance of these race questions is exemplified by describing the situation in so-called "mission camps" where many of the removed children were brought up. Furthermore, the concept and apparent "threat" of the "half-caste" (Indigenous Australians of mixed parentage) is outlined and political, legal and public actions concerning the Indigenous People are presented. To illustrate the finding, there is a brief analysis of the movie "Rabbit-Proof Fence" by Phillip Noyce and the drama "Stolen" by Jane Harrison. Moreover, the question of genocide in the context of the United Nations resolution is discussed. Finally, the author evokes the sensitive topic of compensation funds for the "Stolen Generations" and gives a brief cross-reference to the very similar history in Canada and New Zealand.

The removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families gained national attention in Australia following the Bringing Them Home Report in 1997. However, the voices of Indigenous parents were largely missing from the Report. The Inquiry attributed their lack of testimony to the impact of trauma and the silencing impact of parents’ overwhelming sense of guilt and despair; a submission by Link-Up NSW commented on Aboriginal mothers being “unwilling and unable to speak about the immense pain, grief and anguish that losing their children had caused them.” This book explores what happened to Aboriginal mothers who had children removed and why they have overwhelmingly remained silent about their experiences. Identifying the structural barriers to Aboriginal mothering in the Stolen Generations era, the author examines how contemporary laws, policies and practices increased the likelihood of Aboriginal child removal and argues that negative perceptions of Aboriginal mothering underpinned removal processes, with tragic consequences. This book makes an important contribution to understanding the history of the Stolen Generations and highlights the importance of designing inclusive truth-telling processes that enable a diversity of perspectives to be shared.

"The first essay in the 'Quartely Essay' series, is an attempt to come to terms with the fact that a group of right-wing commentators (centred in the first instance around Manne's old magazine 'Quadrant' under the editorship of Paddy McGuinness) has effectively railroaded national awareness of how large numbers of Aboriginal children were separated from their families in the period between 1910 and 1970."--Intro. A brilliant polemical essay which doubles as a succinct history of how the Aborigines were mistreated and an exposure of the ignorance of those who want to deny that history.

A Rape of the Soul So Profound began when a young researcher accidentally came upon restricted files in an archives collection. What he read overturned all his assumptions about an important part of Aboriginal experience and Australia's past. The book ends in the present, 20 years later, in the aftermath of the Royal Commission on the Stolen Generations. Along the way Peter Read investigates how good intentions masked policies with inhuman results. He tells the poignant stories of many individuals, some of whom were forever broken and some who went on to achieve great things. This is a book about much sorrow and occasional madness, about governments who pretended things didn't happen, and about the opportunities offered to right a great wrong.

The Black Grapevine written by Linda Briskman and has been published by Federation Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Family & Relationships categories.

The Black Grapevine tells the extraordinary story of Indigenous efforts to stop children becoming part of the 'stolen generations' and to end the government policies and practices which destroyed their families.Linda Briskman uses the story of the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Island Child Care (SNAICC) to centre her book. Indigenous people involved tell how they came together to form a national organisation for child care, how they found similar experiences from one end of Australia to the other, how they pooled experience and emotion to provide support for one another, how they lobbied for a national inquiry. And they campaigned. Indigenous activists fought with astonishing resilience for recognition of past and present practices, for the right to have Indigenous viewpoints to the forefront, and for resources.Briskman's story goes beyond the contest with the state to give a convincing portrait of the ways in which Indigenous groups worked. There are connections with international action, educational and fund-raising projects, and the much-vaunted annual Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day.She concludes by reflecting on the successes of campaigns and actions to date, and the extent of 'unfinished business'. Her strong academic background combines with the oral testimony of the activists to produce a fast-moving book that is both entertaining and rigorous.
