It was early in December in the great wilds of Canada, and the weather was starting to get very, very cold. It was deer hunting season, and Grandpa Sam and his son, Marc, were staying at their hunting camp across from the grounds of a kind old gentleman named Uncle Bill and his wife, Aunt Betsy. Every night after their hunt, Grandpa Sam and Marc returned to camp to find a large cat trying to find food in the driveway. But they didnt know that the cat was trying to find food not just for herself, but for her sweet little calico kitten as well. Soon after, coyotes were heard howling and yapping around camp. A couple of days later, Uncle Bill decided to take a break after a long day of hard work. He took a seat on the camp steps, and as he sat enjoying the warmth of the sun, he was surprised to hear a soft meow from beneath him. He looked down to find a beautiful calico kitten with fur of many colors and bright emerald eyes. He didnt know it then, but this was a special kitten with a special job given to her by God, in answer to a prayer.

The Cat looks at animals that are not easy to see! The Cat in the Hat introduces young readers to the concept of camouflage—a type of adaptation that helps animals survive. Children will learn how some animals change color to blend in with their surroundings, how some disguise themselves by matching the shape or texture of their environment, and how others use their coloring to make it hard for predators to see the outlines of their bodies. Examples include well-known animals like zebras, crocodiles, polar bears, and penguins, as well as lesser-known ones like tailor ants, decorator crabs, stick insects, and more! Ideal for supporting the Common Core State Standards, and a natural for fans of the hit PBS Kids show The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, this is a great way to introduce beginning readers to science and nonfiction!

Three soldiers recently returned from the war in Afghanistan are in custody at Ft Carson in Colorado Springs. They're werewolves, suffering from post traumatic stress, which has left them unable to control their shapeshifting, unable to interact with people. Kitty agrees to see them; after her own battles in KITTY'S HOUSE OF HORRORS (Kitty #7), she feels a great deal of sympathy for them. The soldiers were part of a unit fighting Taliban insurgents in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. Their captain, the original werewolf, transformed the others; their new-found strengths including the ability to survive untold violence while infiltrating remote enemy positions, made them the perfect soldiers for this mission. But it was the captain who kept the group together and kept them sane; when a particularly potent mortar attack killed the captain, the remaining lycanthrope soldiers grew more and more wild, until the final three survivors were captured and delivered to Dr Shumacher at the Center for the Study of Paranatural Biology for treatment. Kitty tries to bring the men into her own pack, to socialise them back into some kind of normal existence, but the group's sergeant has other plans: he's intent on driving out Kitty and Ben and becoming the leader of a new squad of killers.

Kitty is living a happy, carefree life as a dairymaid in the countryside. The grand family she is employed by looks after her well, and she loves her trade, caring for the gentle cows and working in the cool, calm dairy. And then, of course, there is Will, the river man who she thinks is very fond of her, and indeed she is of him. Surely he will ask her to marry him soon? Then one day disaster strikes: Will disappears. Kitty is first worried and then furious. She fears that Will has only been leading her on all this time, and has now gone to London to make his fortune, forgetting about her completely. So when Kitty is asked to go to London to pick up a copy of Pride and Prejudice, the latest novel by the very fashionable Jane Austen, Kitty leaps at the chance to track down Will. But Kitty has no idea how vast London is, and how careful she must be. It is barely a moment before eagle-eyed pickpockets have spotted the country-born-and-bred Kitty and relieved her of her money and belongings. Dauntingly fast, she has lost her only means of returning home and must face the terrifying prospect of stealing in order to survive - and of being named a thief . . .

The novel is set in and around "Uncle Corny's" garden near Sunbury-on-Thames. The story turns on the love of Kit, the market-gardener's nephew, for Kitty, the daughter of a good but foolish scientific man, who has succeeded in making his own and his daughter's life miserable by marrying a second wife. This lady and her son Donovan are the villains of the story, and by their machinations poor Kit and Kitty are separated and made miserable. The course of true love is thwarted both before and after marriage: Kitty, for example, being stolen from her bridegroom during the honeymoon. Poetic justice is amply wreaked in the end on all ill-doers in an accumulation of horrors
