Patented in 1836, the Colt pistol with its revolving cylinder was the first practical firearm that could shoot more than one bullet without reloading. Its most immediate impact was on the expansionism of the American west, where white emigrants and US soldiers came to depend on it, and where Native Americans came to dread it. In making the revolver, Colt also changed American manufacturing, and revolutionized industry in the United States. Rasenberger brings the brazenly ambitious and profoundly innovative industrialist and leader Samuel Colt to vivid life. During an age of promise and progress, and also of slavery, corruption, and unbridled greed, Colt not only helped to create this America, he completely embodied it.-- adapted from info provided

The fascinating story of the American inventor and manufacturer who perfected the revolver Samuel Colt (1814-1862) first patented his "Colt" revolver in 1835 and thereby redefined the architecture of handguns. This stunning book is the first to present in detail the evolution of his most famous invention and to document the unsurpassed Colt firearms collections held by the Wadsworth Atheneum. Colt designed his revolvers with an artistic sensibility--paying particular attention to form and beauty and juxtaposing colors and finishes to heighten the visual effects. He was also one of the first American manufacturers to secure celebrity endorsements and to commission paintings by renowned artists like George Catlin to promote his arms. Colt's standards for excellence, industrial foresight, and quest for market domination are explored in light of primary documents that reveal his constant battles to protect his patents. Essays discuss Colt's personal collection of historic firearms as well as the memorial collection of Colt-manufactured firearms, the relationship between art and commerce as they pertain to the inventor's career, and his international celebrity. Richly illustrated and beautifully produced, this volume presents the artistry of the firearms that Colt worked so diligently to perfect--as well as his promotional abilities that made a tremendous impact on American culture.

In 1836, Samuel Colt changed the face of warfare with the production of the first of a series of iconic and influential single-action revolvers, including the .44-calibre Colt Walker and the seminal .45-calibre Colt Single Action Army, which remains in production today. These weapons shifted the role of the pistol from single-shot weapon of last resort to a practical and powerful sidearm that gave the user the ability to defend himself once his primary armament was discharged. It transformed cavalry tactics and relegated the sword to a largely ceremonial role in many armies. Featuring full-colour artwork, expert analysis and gripping first-hand accounts, this is the absorbing story of Colt's family of single-action revolvers, covering their origins, development, use and lasting impact on the modern world.

When one hears the name Samuel Colt, one immediately thinks of the Colt revolver, but how many people realise that he was one of the first businessmen to appreciate the financial implications of mass production, or that he was a pioneer in using machinery to produce products with truly interchangeable parts. How many know that he cut the working hours of his employees, supplied them with housing near their workplace and decent washing facilities at work, together with a meeting hall, theatre and library. All this in the first half of the nineteenth century. The story of Samuel Colt's life is one that involves love, determination, tragedy, family strife, intrigue and even murder. From an early age Colt was determined to make his fortune as an inventor and whilst working on a farm, he read of inventors who had changed the world. He was especially inspired by John Fulton, who designed the first practical submarine and he was intrigued with the idea of creating explosions under water. At the age of just fifteen, he blew up a raft on Ware pond, using electricity, delived via a waterproof cable and produced by a Galvanic cell that he made himself. Sent to sea by his father, he conceived the idea of improving the design of revolvers and carved a wooden model of one while on a voyage to India. To raise the money needed to develop his invention, Samuel Colt became Dr. Coult and toured a sideshow demonstrating the effects of nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) when inhaled into the lungs. When finally, he launched the "Patent Arms Manufacturing Company" he was beset with financial problems from the outset. Lack of sales and disputes over money with his cousin Dudley, who held the purse strings, eventually doomed the venture to failure. Being his own master again he developed his, "submarine battery" and harbour defence system and the fact that he failed to sell his idea to the government, seriously delayed the development of America's underwater warfare capability. Family tragedy struck again when his brother, John Caldwell Colt, was arrested for murder and sentenced to hang. John Colt was visited in prison by the author Edgar Allen Poe, and the way Colt disposed of his victim's body was in some part the inspiration for his story, "The Oblong Box." John Colt committed suicide on the day of his execution, only hours after marrying the mother of his child in his prison cell. Tragedy continued to pursue Colt's family, even after he died in 1862, one of America's richest businessmen, when his last surviving child, Caldwell Colt, met a mysterious death aboard his yacht.
