Despite the thirst for more information about women's golf, very little exists about its history outside of books about the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Hudson fills this void, offering a complete history of women in golf. He focuses on the fascinating development of women's golf, the creation of the women's tour, star athletes of the past, the astronomical rise of the present-day tour greats, and the future of the sport. Golf may well have replaced baseball as America's pastime, and the sport enjoys incredible popularity across the globe. At the professional level, women's golf continues to escalate in popularity and media attention, particularly with the dominance of LPGA champion Annika Sorenstam and the interest surrounding teenage phenom Michelle Wie. Despite the thirst for more information about women's golf, very little exists about its history outside of books about the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Hudson's new book fills this void, focusing on the fascinating development of women's golf, the creation of the women's tour, star athletes of the past, and the astronomical rise of the present-day tour greats. In addition, Hudson examines women's golf in the context of the country's history of discrimination against women. Women's golf grew in popularity after the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting the right of suffrage. Unfortunately, gender discrimination remains a reality in the world of golf in certain locales of country club golf. Nonetheless, women's golf has never been more popular. For example, the Futures Tour, where girls and young women hone their skills on the way to the LPGA, has grown to more than 300 players from 27 countries, making it the largest international developmental tour in the world. And the 2006 LPGA Tour featured 34 events with prize money nearing $50 million, the highest ever in LPGA history. In 1890, Hudson writes, the Washington Post reported that some girls are anxious to learn golf, because they are really fond of sport and exercise; others, because it gives them a chance to show off a natty suit. Those girls are now acknowledged as women—and this book shows how very far they, and their sport, have come.

When the Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto began in 1924, some provinces had not even granted women the right to vote. Most married golfers were social members of their husbands’ clubs and single women rarely held memberships. Women club members could not hold shares or vote on club affairs. And of course, women’s playing times were limited. Women golfers in the Toronto area were fortunate that these conditions were unacceptable to Ada Mackenzie. Although she worked in a bank and played golf on weekends, she had already won the Canadian Ladies’ Open, in 1919. Tim O’Connor tells how Ada enlisted the support of some extraordinary women, and men, to help realize the dream of a club run by women for women. The Ladies’ pays tribute to Ada and to those wonderful people who guided the club through its financial vicissitudes and a world war to reach its proud 75th anniversary in 1999.

Jackie Pung written by Betty Dunn and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-02 with categories.

Jackie Pung: Women's Golf Legend tells the story of an inspiring woman revered as one of Hawaii's greatest golfers. Pung was a teenage golf protégé who became one of the top women competitors on the LPGA tour for twelve consecutive years--but the journey wasn't easy. Her self-described "life of inner turmoil" is punctuated with heartbreaking moments, such as her seemingly victorious final stroke at the 1957 U.S. Women's Open. Only minutes later, she was disqualified on a technicality. While author Betty Dunn carefully follows the ups and downs in Pung's golf career, the accompanying life lessons make this a relevant read for the non-golfer as well. Through financial and family hardships, racial discrimination, mental collapse, and one-hundred-pound weight swings, Pung struggles to find her place in the world. And she does, making friends, such as Bob Hope, along the way. In her eighty-plus years, Jackie Pung has gained fame, but not fortune. Nonetheless, she believes she has angels on her shoulders. They serve as her guides while she continues to pursue her mission in life: to share her gifts with others. Through this story, she is able to do just that.
