Number One Bestseller The incredible story of the murder which gripped the nation. When Tom Nevin was brutally murdered in Jack White's Inn on the morning of 19 March 1996 there was widespread mourning for the man known as a 'gentle giant'. And none seemed as grief-stricken as his widow, Catherine. She stood by the graveside holding a single red rose, the classic symbol of a lost love. But even as that picture occupied the front page of the nation's newspapers, the rumours had started. Four years later Catherine Nevin stood in the dock and listened impassively as a jury found her guilty of murdering her husband, and guilty on three counts of soliciting others to murder. The trial had kept the entire country enthralled, as every day more bizarre stories emerged: contract killers, money laundering, the IRA, sexual affairs, plastic surgery, contacts in high places. It had all the ingredients of a bestselling thriller, but this was real life, and with a real victim. The Black Widow is the story of a woman who wanted it all and didn't care how she got it. Niamh O'Connor, a journalist who sat through every day of the record-breaking trial, explores the personality behind the glamorous mask, the real motives for the murder, and, in a series of revealing interviews, unravels the web of intrigue, deception and violence that brought the woman who once gave deportment classes to schoolchildren to the cells of Mountjoy.

Meriwether is a young man of genius, power , drive, and single-minded determination to make one of the greatest marches in the world history--to chart the two thousand uncharted miles from the Mississippi to the Missouri to the mysterious Stoney Mountains, then down Colombia to the Pacific. But President Thomas Jefferson has other plans for the young Meriwether Lewis. It is 1800, and Jefferson calls upon Lewis to be his secretary, ignoring Lewis' request for expedition. The job, though a necessary duty, frustrates Lewis, whose mind is transfixed on his destiny to cross the continent. Freed at last, Lewis calls upon his friend, William Clark to set out on a cross continental trek that will give them towering stature among explorers and assure that the young nation will have its shores washed by opposite oceans. It is a dangerous expedition, as the unexplored territories are filled with huge grizzlies and wild waters, hostile Indians and they will lose their way. They will also be blessed by Sacagawa, the Indian woman whose skill and insight will guide them and in many cases save them. Until they reach the Oregon Country, where the breakers roll unbroken from China. But for all Lewis' fortitude and genius, the man who made the impossible possible has touched the heights of his life and now steps towards his darkling future. Simone Weil written by Thomas R. Nevin and has been published by Univ of North Carolina Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-11-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Over fifty years after her death, Simone Weil (1909-1943) remains one of the most searching religious inquirers and political thinkers of the twentieth century. Albert Camus said she had a "madness for truth." She rejected her Jewishness and developed a strong interest in Catholicism, although she never joined the Catholic church. Both an activist and a scholar, she constantly spoke out against injustice and aligned herself with workers, with the colonial poor in France, and with the opressed everywhere. She came to believe that suffering itself could be a way to unity with God, and her death at thirty-four has been recorded as suicide by starvation. This extraordinary study is primarily a topography of Weil's mind, but Thomas Nevin is persuaded that her thought is inextricably bound to her life and dramatic times. Thus, he not only addresses her thoughts and her prejudices but examines her reasons for entertaining them and gives them a historical focus. He claims that to Weil's generation the Spanish War, the Popular Front, the ascendance of Hitlerism, and the Vichy years were not mere backdrops but definitive events. Nevin explores in detail not only matters of continuing interest, such as Weil's leftist politics and her attempt to embrace Christianity, but also hitherto unexamined aspects of her life and work which permit a deeper understanding of her: her writings on science, her work as a poet and dramatist, and her selective friendships. The thread uniting these topics is her struggle to maintain her independence as a free thinker while resisting community such as Judaism could have offered her. Her intellectual struggles eloquently reveal the desperate isolation of Jews torn between the lure of assimilation and the tormented dignity of their communal history. Nevin's massive research draws on the full range of essays, notebooks, and fragments from the Simone Weil archives in Paris, many of which have never been translated or published. The War of 1812 would either make America a global power that swept all the way to the Pacific—or break it into small pieces bound to mighty England. It was a second revolution of sorts, to prove to the British that America had to be taken seriously. The principal actors in this drama were James and Dolley Madison and Andrew and Rachel Jackson. Their courage and determination would shape America's destiny.
