Excerpt from The Story of Our Continent: A Reader in the Geography and Geology of North America, for the Use of Schools Those who read this book will at once perceive that both in the subject-matter and arrangement it departs widely from the ordinary text-books which give an account of North America. It should be understood that the end which the writer sought to attain is not that which may be secured by the ordinary school geographies. Such works undertake to afford the student a large body of detailed information concerning the existing state of the country, and with little or no reference to the steps by which the land came to its present estate. The aim of this work has been to present only those features which can be shown in their relation to the geological development of the continent. The expectation of the author has been that this work will be used as a reader along with some geography which treats in a thorough way the facts of a political and economic nature, such as these text-books ordinarily present. Used in this manner, it will naturally lead the student to perceive how the present state of the country is due to the processes which have gone on in the remote past, and in this way to attain to some of the most enlarging conceptions which the geological history of the earth unfolds. *Best Books of 2014* New Zealand Listener Imagine a typical continent with seemingly endless land in all directions. There are broad valleys and uplands, wide-open vistas across undulating plains, and upstanding mountain ranges far in the distance. There may be prominent features that command attention and draw the eye, such as odd-shaped hills, peaks, pinnacles, mesas and volcanoes. And there may be canyons, valleys, gorges, large depressions and basins. Now imagine this same continent under the sea, and largely drowned. Welcome to Zealandia. Continents are some of Planet Earth's most striking geographic and geological features. To have a continental identity is to be important, significant, recognised. This book makes a compelling claim for Zealandia to take its place alongside Eurasia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica. Zealandia is a continent almost entirely submerged. With New Zealand as its largest inhabited land mass, it stretches north to incorporate New Caledonia, south beyond Auckland and Campbell islands, west beyond Australia's Lord Howe Island and east past the Chathams. Its ancestry reaches back more than half a billion years - a long, complex and dramatic story of growth, stretching, break-up, submergence, immersion and collision. The story of its cargo of plant and animal life is also one of change - of extinction, adaption and migration. A big book full of big ideas, and brought to you by renowned GNS scientists Hamish Campbell (co-author of In Search of Ancient New Zealand) and Nick Mortimer, Zealandia: Our Continent Revealed is in every respect a landmark publication - thought-provoking, visually stunning and eminently readable. 'I couldn't resist this superbly illustrated and persuasively written voyage through the distant past. It's fascinating stuff that will undoubtedly generate considerable debate.' - Christopher Moore, New Zealand Listener

Africa written by John Reader and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-11-05 with History categories.

Drawing on many years of African experience, John Reader has written a book of startling grandeur and scope that recreates the great panorama of African history, from the primeval cataclysms that formed the continent to the political upheavals facing much of the continent today. Reader tells the extraordinary story of humankind's adaptation to the ferocious obstacles of forest, river and desert, and to the threat of debilitating parasites, bacteria and viruses unmatched elsewhere in the world. He also shows how the world's richest assortment of animals and plants has helped - or hindered - human progress in Africa.

Excerpt from The Top of the Continent: The Story of a Cheerful Journey, Through Our National Parks Our national parks are really one part of our national system of education - supreme examples of the workings of nature. They tell the history of the making of the continent, where the primal forces may yet be seen in action. They give a liberal education in beauty and in nobility. Men cannot think meanly in the presence of the canyons and cliffs, the mountains and the cataracts, of our parks. Men must think in large terms when standing face to face with nature in her noblest moods. Mr. Yard loves these playgrounds, natural museums and living laboratories of a fortunate people, and I join in the hope that they may become more really known as great schools.
