Excerpt from The Story of the Earth The science of our schools is, in a word, quantitative. That is, it concerns itself with exact measurements, accurate data, rigorous experiments, and demonstrations of laws which have to do with quantitative relationships. Hours are spent, for instance, in some of our high school laboratories, in the exact deter mination with a vernier caliper of the coefficient of expansion of aluminum. Such experiments are liable to be tedious, require much time, and thereby greatly limit the scope of the sciences taught. They are, moreover, entirely out of the reach of our elementary schools. Excerpt from The Origin of the Earth In telling the story of this search for the mode by which the earth came into being, we have let the Inci dents that led the Inquiry on from one stage to another fall in with the steps of the inquiry itself. It is in keeping with the purposes of this series of booklets that the motives which set researches a-going should have their place with the quests that arose from them. At any rate, it is clear that the reader will be at some advantage in forming his own judgment of the value of what is offered for his acceptance, if the lines along which the inquiry was approached, the conditions that afi'ected the mental attitude Of the inquirer, and the considerations that weighed in reaching conclusions are laid as frankly before him as the conclusions them selves. The reader will of course choose his own pace, but it were well if it were deliberate. Pictures Of nebulae and nebulous pictures rise slowly into good definition. Besides, the interpretations we ofi'er are tentative; it were well to detain them a little for scrutiny as they pass under review. The final story of the birth of the earth will come only after a time when the vestiges of creation have been more keenly discerned and more faithfully rendered than is possible now. Excerpt from The Story of the Earth's Atmosphere I have desired in the present little work to put forward the main features of our knowledge of the conditions which prevail in our atmosphere as they are interpreted through the science of to day. The Atmosphere, unlike its solid partner, contains no gold or coal mines with which to stimulate scientific research. Its study has con sequently been somewhat neglected until of late years, and is even now only just emerging from the stage of myth and speculation into that of fact and certainty. Excerpt from The Story of the Earth in Past Ages On the other hand, earthy meteorites have yielded many of the constituents of volcanic and crystalline rocks. Two kinds of felspar - named labradorite and anorthite - have been recorded in meteorites, and such minerals as Augite, Bronzite, Enstatite, Oli vine, which upon the earth are Often combined with the felspars in mineral union to form crystalline rocks. But the facts are too few and too Obscure to do more than stimulate interest in the relation Of the earth to the bodies among which it moves. Excerpt from The Story of Our Planet IN writing this volume I have not had any intention of attempt ing to add another to the text-books of geology in the English language. Of these there is already an ample supply. Sir A. Geikie's Text-book of Geology, Professor Prestwich's Geology, and the edition of Phillips' Manual of Geology by Professor H. G. Seeley and Mr. R. Etheridge leave no gap to be filled among works of larger size, while a student not yet ripe for these has ample choice among books on smaller scale, which can be arranged in a graduated series from Mr. Jukes-browne's Handbook to the most elementary Primer. Excerpt from Ice Ages: The Story of the Earth's Revolutions IN two earlier little works (the A B C of Evolution and The Evolution of Civilization), of the same very modest proportions as this, I have given an outline of the story of Evolution. It is clear from the large circulation of these simple manuals that they have met a very real want. A good proportion of the workers, for whom in particular I write, feel that science means a new and mighty mental power in the world. They are asking if its broad teaching about man and the universe cannot be made plain to them without the use of learned words which they have not time to study, and without masses of detail which only tire them. Excerpt from The Making of the Earth The origin of the earth deals with events of primeval antiquity and with conditions very different from those of the present time. Hence it is not surprising that we find the problem attended by many uncertainties, for we only know the earth after it has waxed old and we only look upon the earth's cold outer surface. Of one fact we can, however, be sure; the earth was originally part of a much larger and less compact mass, from which came all the other members of the Solar System. The earth is not unique in structure or material. Many of the heavenly bodies that we see in the sky at night are similar to the earth; for the spectroscope shows that some of them are composed of similar materials; some also of the fragments of shooting stars that fall upon the earth consist of the same minerals as the rocks of the earth's crust. Excerpt from Perfecting the Earth: A Piece of Possible History This is a Utopian book, but its Utopia is not, as Utopias generally are said to be, in the clouds; on the contrary it is worked out with much detail in accordance with a natural order of sequence from existing conditions, with every point definite in time and place, true in all fundamental physical features to the best maps, true also to the law of cause and effect and duly regarding the limitations of nature. Some to whom this book, in manuscript, has been shown, Object that it is too scientific; perhaps it is the most scientific of Utopian books. That Utopias, fro-m Bellamy back to Plato, are in cloudland. Unscientific, out of touch with reality and unattainable, is the charge which these critics make, while the logical steps required to make Utopia scientific and plant it on the rocks are the features which, when presented, they most object to. This book, however, is written in the belief that these steps are needed. The aim has been to limit the narra tive to the possible, and, following the steps related, to the practicable, while each consequence stated must necessarily follow from the measures preceding. -if these details had been omitted, then my Utopia, like the other Utopias, would have been in the clouds and the purpose of the book could not have been attained. If the earth is ever to be perfected, such meas ures as are here detailed must be taken, and as in the order of nature first things must be done first, so in the plan of this book first things are first related. In necessary sequence from these measures, from a condition natural and probable as things are going, the purpose is to evolve the conduct of a world as it is conceived that the world ought to be conducted, and to plant in the minds of readers a better ideal than that which usually animates mankind. In building an edifice the foundation must first be laid, but, while the steps in that part of the structure are not without a certain interest in themselves, the interest felt there is mainly reflected from the superstructure and the purposes which it is to serve. In this book the first twelve chapters may be re garded' as the laying of a foundation. The building of the superstructure is comprised in the twelve chapters following, while nine chapters at the conclusion of the book portray the life and conditions prevailing in the perfected earth after the work is practically completed.
