Excerpt from The Story of the Fishes These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead, scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his Originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own Opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Excerpt from The Story of Fish Life Every reader who takes up this little volume is certain to be more or less familiar with the animal which we know as a fish. But this familiarity will have been acquired through many channels, varying with the individual. One will have much to tell of angler's lore, of knowledge gained by long hours of silent watching and waiting, ruminating on the mysteries of Nature, and perfecting deep-laid plots to snare her scaly children. He will talk with animation of a well-filled creel, and recount wondrous tales of mighty fish lost when capture seemed a certainty; fish whose shades grow larger each time the memory revives them, just as their solid selves have doubtless been doing ever since, making their capture less and less likely as they gain in bulk. This must be so, for fish such as loom so large in these stories never seem to be landed! He will regale us with delicious word pictures of stream and lake and sea, and curious facts of the ways and customs of fish of all kinds, and of all lands. Another will have much that is worth knowing to tell, concerning fish as a food supply, and of the industries connected therewith, of which enough might be said to fill another book of the size of this little volume. Yet others could add curious facts gained in our various fish-hatcheries, or facts encrusted but too often by painful memories of days of peril and exposure encountered in that great arena, where men war with Nature, and take from her as by force - the deep sea-fisheries. Excerpt from A History of the Fishes of Massachusetts As one of the Commissioners on the Zoology of Massachusetts, in the year 1839, I prepared a Report on the Ichthyology of the State. From the brief time Occupied in its preparation, it was necessarily imperfect, and, not being accompanied by figures, was comparatively useless, except to scientific men. Since the appearance of that communication, much information has been obtained respecting several of the most common and valuable fishes, and quite a number of new species have been ascertained to exist in our waters. Having carefully re-described all the species, I trust the following paper will present an accurate history of the fishes of our State. Considering this as the completion of my former Report, I have kept in View the primary object of the commission, - to asoer tain the value of our Fauna in an economical point of View, rather than to prepare labored scientific descriptions. 1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Fishes The scope of the present work is to give in a concise form an account of the principal facts relating to the structure, classification, and life-history of Fishes. It is intended to meet the requirements of those who are desirous of studying the elements of Ichthyology; to serve as a book of reference to zoologists generally; and, finally, to supply those who, like travellers, have frequent opportunities of observing fishes, with a ready means of obtaining information. The article on "Ichthyology," prepared by the late Sir J. Richardson for the eighth edition of the "Encyclopaedia Britannica," is the only publication which has hitherto partly satisfied such requirements; and when I undertook, some years ago, to revise, or rather rewrite that article for the new edition of that work, it occurred to me that I might at the same time prepare a Handbook of Ichthyology, whilst reserving for the article an abstract so condensed as to be adapted for the wants of the general reader. From the general plan of the work I have only departed in those chapters which deal with the Geographical Distribution of Fishes. Excerpt from Fishes I Have Known The subject of fish and fishing has always been of such interest, particularly to inhabitants of sea girt lands, that this book (professedly non technical) recording my experience of the life and habits of fishes, and the various modes of capturing them in Great Britain and elsewhere, does not, I think, require much justification for its existence. Excerpt from Fishes and Their Ways of Life Many keen fishermen have a particular devotion to that form of the art which is practised from a boat, and among their number I certainly include myself. I have Often practised their art in the past, and I practise it still. At any fit and proper time I am prepared to accompany a friend to river, lake, or sea, especially the sea. And so I find delights unknown to the Shore fisherman. I am brought closer to creatures which must be watched for if they are to be caught, and I have a greater Share in their existence. Fishing is no longer a sedate and tranquil form of recreation, no longer a mere stroll along a river bank, or an excuse for a nap; it becomes something more in the nature of hunting, of the chase. It has attractions and dangers all its own. But I do not always confine myself to that common type of fishing which is concerned with catching fish and nothing more. I am after something more than this, and I use special gear. As a naturalist I fish because I seek to garner all the living creatures that dwell in the waters so that I may know them all and learn all about them. The world of waters does not consist only of the fish we use for food. Together with these live other creatures having a place and usefulness of their own. And they are all worth knowing. So. Excerpt from Second Supplement to the First Edition of the History of British Fishes William yarrell was a man rather below the middle height, having a robust, well-knit frame, a sagacious and pleasing countenance, and frank and agreeable man ners. His aspect was that of a stout yeoman, such as those who in times past have contributed with head and hand to elevate their native England to its present rank among the nations; or rather his demeanour may be said to have indicated exactly what he was in fact - a citizen who had thriven in the greatest of commercial cities, but who, strong in native honesty and self-respect, had passed un scathed through the perils of money-making, his cheerful countenance bearing no lines traced by the thirst of gain or the debasing passion for hoarding: on the contrary, his mild but fearless eye, and his open forehead, showed, even to a stranger, a man at peace with himself and with his fellow men.
