Excerpt from The Story of Thomas Carlyle "If," says Carlyle, "an individual is of sufficient consequence to have his life recorded for public remembrance, we have always been of opinion that the public ought to be made acquainted with all the inward springs and relations of his character." Heartily concurring in this opinion, I have ventured to make the study of this great man's life my aim for months past - to try and account for the gloom and despondency which were so marked in his character, and which, on the surface of things, seem almost unaccountable. In the following pages I have endeavoured to give to my readers incidents in his life, traits in his character, that made him so little of an optimist in expression, and yet the inward conviction that at heart he did not really believe the universe to be demoniacal, but God-like, and man the temple of the Most High. The following pages, I trust, will prove that he was no selfish, cantankerous, domestic tyrant, or teacher of virtues he failed himself to put in practice; that in him there was nothing false or insincere; that he was throughout his long, chequered existence actuated by noble and heroic motives, carrying heavy burdens enough to crush a less dauntless spirit. By these the courteous reader may conjecture what the writer must have read, and the critical reader may discover what he has omitted to read. Some special services, nevertheless, claim special expressions of gratitude. While in no respect responsible for any of the author's statements or opinions not directly quoted from himself, Professor Masson has laid him under the deepest obligation for help and counsel. To Mr. Alexander Ireland, another old and faithful friend of Carlyle's, the writer is indebted for his perusal of the proof-sheets, and for the loan of a copy of the "Reminiscences," in which the innumerable errors of the first edition, only within these last few days superseded by Professor Norton's, were carefully corrected by Mr. Ireland's own hand. Mr. Leslie Stephen's article in the "Dictionary of National Biography" has proved most serviceable as a luminous digest of the subject. Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: A History of the First Forty Years of His Life, 1795-1835 Mr. Carlyle expressed a desire in his will that of him no biography should be written. I find the same reluctance in his Journal. No one, he said, was likely to understand a history, the secret of which was unknown to his closest friends. He hoped that his wishes would be respected. Partly to take the place of a biography of himself, and part ly for other reasons, he collected the letters of his wife - letters which covered the whole period of his life in London to the date of her death, when his own active work was finished. He prepared them for publication, adding notes and introductory explanations, as the last sacred duty which remained to him in the world. He intended it as a monument to a character of extreme beauty; while it would tell the public as much about himself as it could reasonably expect to learn. These letters he placed in my hands eleven years ago, with materials for an Introduction which he was himself unable to complete. He could do no more with it, he said. He could not make up his mind to direct positively the publication even of the letters themselves. He wished them to be published, but he left the decision to myself; and when I was reluctant to undertake the sole responsibility, he said that, if I was in doubt when the time came, I might consult his brother John and his friend Mr. Forster.
