Excerpt from The Story of Virginia's First Century The faces of other royal personages appear in these pages, for they were sovereigns Of the colony which added to the British Empire its Fifth Crown, as well as of Mother Eng land. Their names still live in the names Of Virginia counties, towns, rivers, and capes, and in that of William and Mary College, and are constantly on the lips Of men, women, and children of today in every nook and corner of the state. More over, when in the middle of this Seventeenth Century, in the Calendar, and First in the life Of the settlement, the downfall of Charles I made England a commonwealth, loyal Virginia remained, for a time, a royal colony and the youthful Charles II was proclaimed king there. Excerpt from Virginia Dare: A Romance of the Sixteenth Century The author would like to remind the readers of the romance of Virginia Dare, that if they go back in memory to their schooldays, and the details of their American history, they will remember that Governor White sailed for England from Roanoke on the 28th of August, 1587, leaving behind him his daughter, and her child who had been born ten days before; that he was unable to return immediately, owing to war with Spain, and when after the lapse of the three years he did return, he found the island of Roanoke deserted, and a palisade built, as if there had been a fight with the Indians. He found no cross, as he had directed them to put one if they were in trouble, over the name of the place to which they had removed. But he found on one tree the first three letters of the word "Croatoan," and on another the entire word. They attempted to find Croatoan, but, losing their anchors, were obliged to drift away and give up the search. Excerpt from Virginia of Virginia: A Story Roden was not only a new arrival in Virginia, but in America, and the impres sion made upon him had not, to speak very moderately, been favorable. Coming from Washington, some one in the train had asked him if it did not remind him of England. He had answered with some curtness that it did not, demanding at the same time why he should be. Particularly reminded Of England by the state of the weather in Virginia. His interlocutor had replied with the never-failing urbanity of the Virginian farmer, that anybody could tell he was an Englisher by th' way he talked, and them loose pants. At the moment he first saw the figure alluded to, the owner of the British ac cent and the loose pants was shivering in spite of the top-coat turned Up about his ears and the soft hat pulled down to meet it. Excerpt from History of Virginia: A Brief d104 Book for Schools In this volume, I have endeavored to present in a clear and connected manner the leading facts in the history of Virginia. The materials have been drawn from the most reliable authorities, and much time has been spent in comparing them so as to render the narrative as accurate as possible. In the colonial period, the richness of the sources of information proved a continual embarrassment; and I found myself compelled to leave out many, interesting incidents, to prevent the book from exceeding the well-defined limits within which a state history for school use should be kept. Virginia was the cradle of the English race in America, and for this reason her history is of more than ordinary interest. Besides this, the great variety of romantic and important events that have taken place within her borders, the immortal characters that have been nurtured upon her soil, and the unswerving manner in which her people have always contended for their rights, render her history specially worthy of being studied. Excerpt from Jamestown, Virginia: The Townsite and Its Story It remained for the Virginia Company Of London, under its charter of April 10, 1606, to found the first permanent English settlement in America. This joint Stock company, a commercial organization, from its inception assumed a national character. It was instrumental, under its charter provisions, in guaranteeing to the settlers in the New World the rights, freedoms, and privileges enjoyed by Englishmen at home and the enjoyment Of their customary manner of living which they adapted to their new environment with the passage of years. Jamestown was the site Of the first settlement that grew into the Colony of Virginia and gave heart to those men who settled the colonies that Came later. The first Virginians landed in May 1607, built houses and a fort, planted crops, and began the struggle for the conquest Ofa vast primitive land. They brought with them their church and respect for God, maintained trial by jury and their rights as freemen, and soon were developing representative government. All Of these things are a part Of the story of Jamestown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
