Published in 1930, when Japan was struggling to define and assert its national and cultural identity, The Structure of Iki (Iki no kôzô) re-introduced the Japanese to a sophisticated tradition of urbane and spirited stylishness (iki) that was forged in the Edo period. Upon his return from Europe, Kuki Shûzô (1888–1941) made use of the new theoretical frameworks based on Western Continental methodology to redefine the significance of iki in Japanese society and culture. By applying Heidegger’s hermeneutics to this cultural phenomenon, he attempted to recast traditional understanding in the context of Western aesthetic theory and reestablish the centrality of a purely Japanese sense of "taste." The three critical essays that accompany this new translation of The Structure of Iki look at various aspects of Kuki, his work, and the historical context that influenced his thinking. Hiroshi Nara first traces Kuki’s interest in a philosophy of life through his exposure to Husserl, Heidegger, and Bergson. In the second essay, J. Thomas Rimer compels readers to reexamine The Structure of Iki as a work in the celebrated tradition of zuihitsu (stream-of-consciousness writings) and takes into account French literary influences on Kuki. The philosopher’s controversial link with Heidegger is explored by Jon Mark Mikkelsen in the final essay.

This 23 page report is an initial investigation into the role that low-angle faulting may play in the formation of the Thermo Hot Springs Known Geothermal Area (KGRA), within the Sevier geothermal anomaly of southwestern Utah. The stratigraphy and structures exposed in the southern mineral mountains are used as an analog for studying the subsurface stratigraphy and the detachment fault within the Thermo Hot Springs KGRA.

The Structure And Function Of Aquatic Microbial Communities written by Christon J. Hurst and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-13 with Science categories.
This book discusses how aquatic microbial communities develop interactive metabolic coordination both within and between species to optimize their energetics. It explains that microbial community structuration often includes functional stratification among a multitude of organisms that variously exist either suspended in the water, lodged in sediments, or bound to one another as biofilms on solid surfaces. The authors describe techniques that can be used for preparing and distributing microbiologically safe drinking water, which presents the challenge of successfully removing the pathogenic members of the aquatic microbial community and then safely delivering that water to consumers. Drinking water distribution systems have their own microbial ecology, which we must both understand and control in order to maintain the safety of the water supply. Since studying aquatic microorganisms often entails identifying them, the book also discusses techniques for successfully isolating and cultivating bacteria. As such, it appeals to microbiologists, microbial ecologists and water quality scientists.

Cool is a word of American English that has been integrated into the vocabulary of numerous languages around the globe. Today it is a term most often used in advertising trendy commodities, or, more generally, in promoting urban lifestyles in our postmodern age. But what is the history of the term “cool?" When has coolness come to be associated with certain modes of contemporary self-fashioning? On what grounds do certain nations claim a privilege to be recognized as “cool?" These are some of the questions that served as a starting-point for a comparative cultural inquiry which brought together specialists from American Studies and Japanese Studies, but also from Classics, Philosophy and Sociology. The conceptual grid of the volume can be described as follows: (1) Coolness is a metaphorical term for affect-control. It is tied in with cultural discourses on the emotions and the norms of their public display, and with gendered cultural practices of subjectivity. (2) In the course of the cultural transformations of modernity, the term acquired new importance as a concept referring to practices of individual, ethnic, and national difference. (3) Depending on cultural context, coolness is defined in terms of aesthetic detachment and self-irony, of withdrawal, dissidence and even latent rebellion. (4) Coolness often carries undertones of ambivalence. The situational adequacy of cool behavior becomes an issue for contending ethical and aesthetic discourses since an ethical ideal of self-control and a strategy of performing self-control are inextricably intertwined. (5) In literature and film, coolness as a character trait is portrayed as a personal strength, as a lack of emotion, as an effect of trauma, as a mask for suffering or rage, as precious behavior, or as savvyness. This wide spectrum is significant: artistic productions offer valid insights into contradictions of cultural discourses on affect-control. (6) American and Japanese cultural productions show that twentieth-century notions of coolness hybridize different cultural traditions of affect-control.

A report concerning stratigraphy, structure, and geophysics of a region within the eastern Mojave Desert and Mojave-Sonoran structural-physiographic belt, wherein tectonic activity has occurred at a very low rate since late Miocene time. Important structural activity of Tertiary age culminated and concluded in a major regional episode of detachment faulting.

This book is devoted to different aspects of tectonic researches. New results and interpretations are presented here for diverse tectonic settings. Most of the chapters include up-to-date materials of detailed geological investigations, often combined with geophysical data, which can help understand more clearly the essence of mechanisms of different tectonic processes. Some chapters are devoted to the tectonic evolution of regions (East Antarctica, East Kazakhstan, Mongolo-Okhotsk orogenic belt), and others have dealt with the different aspects of tectonic events: influence of detachment structural deformation on pore structure evolution in shales, evolution of drainage in response to brittle-ductile dynamics and surface processes, soft sediment deformation structures triggered by the modern earthquakes, and post-opening deformation history of the Japan Sea back-arc basin.

Manyimportant decisions, ranging from locating an oil prospect or a land-fill site to determining the location and sizeof an earthquake-producingfault,are based on geo logical maps. Because a map-scale structure is never completely sampled in three dimensions, geological maps and the cross sections derived from maps are always interpretations. The interpretation may be complicated by direct structural observati ons, likebedding attitudes, that are misleading because they represent a local structu re,not the map-scale structure. Some data may simply be wrong. The interpretation of the geometry of even a single horizon, therefore, alwaysinvolvesinferences about the validity and meaning of the observations themselves as wellas the nature of the geo metry between the observation points. How is an accurate interpretation to be con structed and how is it to be validated once complete? The objective of this book is to demonstrate the concepts and techniques required to obtain the most complete and accurate interpretation of the geometry ofstructures at the map scale. The methods are designedprimarilyforinterpretations based on out crop measurements and subsurface information of the type derived from welllogs and two-dimensional seismic reflection profiles. These forms of information all present a similar interpretive problem, which is to define the geometry from isolated and dis continuous observations. The underlying philosophy of interpretation is that structu res are three-dimensional solid bodies and that data from throughout the bodyshould be integrated into an internally consistent interpretation.
