This study focuses on the first group targeted in the genocide known as the Holodomor: Ukrainian intelligentsia, the “brain of the nation,” using the words of Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term genocide and enshrined it in international law. The study’s author examines complex and devastating effects of the Holodomor on Ukrainian society during the 1920–1930s. Members of intelligentsia had individual and professional responsibilities. They resisted, but eventually they were forced to serve the Soviet regime. Ukrainian intelligentsia were virtually wiped out, most of its writers and a third of its teachers. The remaining cadres faced a choice without a choice if they wanted to survive. The author analyzes how and why this process occurred and what role intellectuals, especially teachers, played in shaping, contesting, and inculcating history. Crucially, the author challenges Western perceptions of the all-Union famine that was allegedly caused by ad hoc collectivization policies, highlighting the intentional nature of the famine as a tool of genocide, persecution, and prosecution of the nationally conscious Ukrainian intelligentsia, clergy, and grain growers. The author demonstrates the continuity between Stalinist and neo-Stalinist attempts to prevent the crystallization of the nation and subvert Ukraine from within by non-lethal and lethal means.

"The monograph is devoted to the modern development of the Ukrainian state, which appeared on the political map after 1991. The movement to the independence of Ukraine began even before the collapse of the USSR. In the late 1980s, the Ukrainian authorities, represented by the Communists of Ukraine, began to pursue a policy aimed at isolating the republic's economic and political system from the central authorities. Such a policy in a short time transformed into a national movement, focused on the republic's withdrawal from the united Union, and the establishment of Ukraine as an independent state. The process of formation of the political elite of Ukraine, its ideological views, which for decades have determined the internal and external policies of the Ukrainian state, are explored. The book examines the factor of regional development of Ukraine, the role of the historical factor in the formation and development of the modern Ukrainian state. The territory of Ukraine is a "mosaic" of individual regions, which for a long time were part of different states. This factor had a huge impact on the formation of modern Ukraine, laying the inter-regional contradictions. The significance of the economic problems that Ukraine faced is analyzed. A lot of attention is given to the internal political struggle that has developed since independence. The struggle of the political elites of Ukraine at times reached violent terms, which led to internal political crises. Throughout the entire period of independent development, Ukraine was torn by internal contradictions. Issues of language, identity and culture were constantly used by the Ukrainian elites in the struggle for power. The book shows the evolution of Ukraine's foreign policy. The policy towards European integration and the expansion of relations with NATO was formed gradually, under the influence of internal and external factors. It is concluded that the foreign policy of the Ukrainian state was consistent and aimed at weakening relations with Russia. A similar policy was pursued by all Ukrainian presidents, each of whom contributed to the course of Ukraine towards rapprochement with the EU and the United States of America. In recent years, Ukraine has not been able to overcome internal contradictions. Interregional differences, the history of the formation of the Ukrainian state, continue to have a negative impact on the process of the formation of Ukraine as an independent state. The victory in the election of the new president, Volodymyr Zelensky, opened up a new stage in the development of Ukraine, which leaves a lot of room for academic discussions of the country's future"--

From the very beginning of their independence the newly independent states were afflicted with different problems resulting from the ambiguous situation of quasi sovereignty but still strictly Moscow centralised rule. A regime change always demands great flexibility in ideas of these who have to deal with the remains of the past and the results of the breakdown in order to find an adequate approach to the new realities. It is therefore not astonishing that in account to the various economic and social constraints in the different Newly Independent States, each was in search of its own way to deal with the problems of state-building, acceptance of the international community and Russia's attempts to dominate the former sphere of influence. The analysis will deal with the special case of Ukraine's emancipation from the USSR heritage and the historic dominance of an imperial Russia. The focus of analysis will be put on the processes of state-identity building in the framework of Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC), Western Europe and the EU, as well as the context of Russian foreign policy towards the 'Near Abroad'. The subject is especially relevant today, since a wave of 'colourful' revolutions has taken place on the territories of some former Soviet republics in the past to years, showing that the political processes of forming a nation are still hard to predict in that region.
