Excerpt from The Study of Architectural Drawing in the School of Architecture Most of this work is done with the pen, pencil-marks upon trac ing-paper being neither distinct nor durable. The outlines of course are traced, from prints or photographs, just as they are found. But the shading, even in the case of wood-cuts, is not text ually reproduced, the forms of the shades and shadows being ren dered by a series of flat tints. These are sometimes put in with the brush, but more often with the pen, parallel vertical lines being employed just as in drawing. This work is indeed, both in the out line work and in the shading, an admirable introduction to draught manship with pen or pencil. The brush is in constant use, how ever, in making tracings of examples of colored decoration from prints of Egyptian tombs, Greek vases, or tiles and terra cotta of every period. The outlines are then sometimes drawn with the pen and filled in with color, which is often laid on the other side of the paper. But these may be dispensed with and the tracing made with the brush altogether. This is particularly effective in tracing anthemions and honeysuckle work from Greek vases, and in this work Japanese brushes prove specially serviceable. These exercises are immediately utilized in the service of the historical studies which compose a chief part of our course. While practicing the essential principles of draughtsmanship in making tracings from drawings, engravings and photographs, our students are at the same time accumulating valuable memoranda for future reference. Building on recent scholarship that examines and reconstructs the design process of classical architecture, John R. Senseney focuses on technical drawing in the building trade as a model for the expression of visual order, showing that the techniques of ancient Greek drawing actively determined concepts about the world. He argues that the uniquely Greek innovations of graphic construction determined principles that shaped the massing, special qualities and refinements of buildings and the manner in which order itself was envisioned.

Francis Palmer Smith was the principal designer of Atlanta-based Pringle and Smith, one of the leading firms of the early twentieth-century South. Smith was an academic eclectic who created traditional, history-based architecture grounded in the teachings of the cole des Beaux-Arts. As The Architecture of Francis Palmer Smith shows, Smith was central to the establishment of the Beaux-Arts perspective in the South through his academic and professional career. After studying with Paul Philippe Cret at the University of Pennsylvania, Smith moved to Atlanta in 1909 to head the new architecture program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He would go on to train some of the South's most significant architects, including Philip Trammell Shutze, Flippen Burge, Preston Stevens, Ed Ivey, and Lewis E. Crook Jr. In 1922 Smith formed a partnership with Robert S. Pringle. In Atlanta, Savannah, Chattanooga, Jacksonville, Sarasota, Miami, and elsewhere, Smith built office buildings, hotels, and Art Deco skyscrapers; buildings at Georgia Tech, the Baylor School in Chattanooga, and the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia; Gothic Revival churches; standardized bottling plants for Coca-Cola; and houses in a range of traditional "period" styles in the suburbs. Smith's love of medieval architecture culminated with his 1962 masterwork, the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. As his career drew to a close, Modernism was establishing itself in America. Smith's own modern aesthetic was evidenced in the more populist modern of Art Deco, but he never embraced the abstract machine aesthetic of high Modern. Robert M. Craig details the role of history in design for Smith and his generation, who believed that architecture is an art and that ornament, cultural reference, symbolism, and tradition communicate to clients and observers and enrich the lives of both. This book was supported, in part, by generous grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc.

Academic architectural education started with the inauguration of the Académie d'Architecture on 3 December 1671 in France.
