Excerpt from The Study of Children and Their School Training This work is addressed chiefly to teachers, parents, and others in daily contact with children; but contains information that is likely to interest those engaged in directing education, philanthropy, and other forms of social work as well as those concerned with mental science. The book has been written in the hope of aiding an advance in the care of children, and in the practice of educational methods, by promoting a more exact study and classification of the children to be cared for and trained; while giving an account of some conditions of childhood in its many varieties as seen from the standpoint of the observer who records what he sees as in other branches of physical science. For the purposes of observation, a clear account of the points to look at, what to look for, and what may be seen, normal or subnormal, forms the alphabet of our subject. Child study has of late years been actively carried on in America and in other countries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Training School Quarterly, Vol. 7: July, August, September, 1920 Books on child study are apt to stress the instinctive basis of a child's nature. This is as it should be. We must know of the influences that go to make mind, family, race, sex, maturity. But we must not forget that these factors come into contact with another, environment. Heredity determines the ability to assimilate knowledge, environment furnishes the material of which the particular bits of knowledge which a child possesses is made. We need then a study of the contents of children's minds, and while the investigations which' have been made along that line are valuable and suggestive, they cannot take the place of a real first-hand study of the child's environment. I am rather of the opinion that we should make time if, instead of starting to cram knowledge into the child as soon as he starts to school, we should spend much time exploring the recesses of his mind to find out what he already has stored away in it. That would save us from teaching what, as Dodd says, he always knowed, as well as from teaching something which the child is utterly unable to grasp because of a lack of experiences, or which he grasps incorrectly because of faulty bases of knowledge. For some time we have been giving lip service to the doctrine that the teacher should teach children that subject-matter is a means to an end. I believe that it is largely lip service only because in the training of teachers we still place the great emphasis of time, effort and teachers on subject-matter with very little time given to, the study of the child. I believe it, further, because teachers in schools spend much time teaching subject - matter and little time studying their children. Teachers must always keep in mind that it is the child that is important; the child gives us our work to do. When we have our schools constructed upona scientific basis I believe that we shall be able to know children as well as it is possible to know subject-matter, and when that is true we shall be able to accomplish many fold what we are now accomplishing. So much of our teaching is now a hit or miss aflair. So much of our subject really doesn't make any difference anyway. We're getting better, but we've a long way to go. Excerpt from School Training of Defective Children Whether the problems to be solved in the recognition and appropriate treatment of mentally defective children are medical, educational, or custodial, or all three combined, is a question worthy of serious consideration. It has hitherto been quite generally assumed that mentally defective children should be and could be cared for satisfactorily by the public school system. In many school systems they are now provided for in special classes; in many others such children are still found in the regular classes for normal children. Hence, for the present at least, the problems involved in the care and training of mental defectives are practically public school problems and must be dealt with from the public school point of view. Unfortunately there is a notion widely prevalent within and without the teaching profession that special attention - sometimes a little of it, sometimes a good deal - bestowed by the regular teachers, will solve the problem and will make these mentally defective children normal. How completely erroneous this notion is Dr. Goddard makes plain in the present volume. Even when mentally defective children are segregated in separate classes - as in the interest of the normal children as well as in their own interest they should be - the notion just referred to is often responsible for the regime to which they are subjected; namely, the regime, usually with some modifications, to be sure, appropriate to normal pupils. Excerpt from Educating the Child at Home: Personal Training the Work Habit By writing this book in plain English it is hoped to reach two results: Firstly. To open the preserves of pedagogy and child-psychology to those who, though naturally most intensely interested in the subject, arc deterred therefrom by the forbidding phraseology wherein it has hitherto been discussed and presented. Secondly. To help mothers to resume and do their sacred duty by their children instead of shirking it and delegating it to the school. All that I have written is based upon actual practical experience and study. Like the long search for the Promised Land is the search for an efficient school, while the great opportunity of home instruction and education is ignored. Where shall I find the best school for my children? Teach them yourself the things you know and can do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Normal Training of the Child At the genesis of our discussion a foreword of explanation is perhaps necessary and advisable. In this busy, progressive, epoch-making age, that man is a dilettante, who either reads, writes or talks for the mere thought of discussion. We should be profoundly thankful that we are fast moving away from the thought of simply seeking truth for truth's sake, studying art for art's sake, or achieving progress for fame's sake. It is now for life's sake and man's sake that we use the microscope and telescope, the scalpel of the surgeon, the atom of the scientist, the brush of the artist. Geology, astronomy, philosophy, psychology, as well as religion must bear a vital relation to man before they can perform their highest service in the working out of the eternal purpose. It is wise then to couple our dreaming with soldiering, our praying with planning, our worship with working. Our purpose is not to rattle the dry bones of either a past or present theology. Excerpt from Mental Hygiene of the School Child This book on mental hygiene is designed primarily for teachers, and the applications that it makes of mental hygiene principles refer primarily to school situations. Mental hygiene is a new and welcome point of View in education, representing the convergence of several streams of thought. As the name implies, it is a part of the great field of hygiene which emphasizes the well-being of the indi vidual. It crystallizes newer curriculum tendencies which stress adjustment and integration of the personality as Important goals of education. It makes possible the conservation of the interests of the whole child which the departmentalization of schools has threatened. It pro vides for the transfer to the school, in part, of the last remnant of child training that has been the exclusive prerogative of the home. It focuses attention anew on the problem of discipline, making application of all' that has been gleaned from recent developments in psychology and the study of the personality. Whereas this book is designed primarily to interpret the meaning of mental hygiene for teachers, the principles discussed, to be really effective, must have been practiced in early childhood and ought to be the possession of every parent as well as of teachers. Excerpt from School Management For some years the education of children has been considered more and more from the standpoint of the child. This has resulted in a great change in our schools, and in no respect is this change more marked than in the government of classes. The old arbitrary form of school government has given place to one more democratic. As under the latter form of government in the state, each citizen must bear his share of responsibility, so the school must be managed in such a way as to train its pupils for efficient social service in a free state. This Manual aims to present school management from this point of view. The teacher who looks upon school management as a factor in the training of children for free citizenship will make a better use of the courses of study than the teacher who works according to the view that the child must he adapted to his studies, to the conditions in the school, and in some respects to the peculiarities of the teacher. The course of study will be regarded as a means rather than as an end: not as a prescription of work in a variety of subjects to he completed within a specified time, but as a means through which the child's efficiency, as a citizen of a free state, may be developed. In the efforts to give effect to such a view, both the organization and the management of the school will he greatly influenced. It is from this point of view that the topics presented in this book should be studied, and it is now offered to teachers-in-training and to teachers in service, in the hope that it may aid them to become more efficient in the work of preparing their pupils for useful citizenship. Excerpt from The Training of Children in the Christian Family This is a book for parents which deals with princi ples rather than with problems or cases. It aims to help parents to think for themselves; and does not undertake to present ready-made formulas for the training of children or prescriptions for use in various emergencies. It is not mere theory, how ever; most of its materials lie within the author's experience as parent and as teacher. The outline of the book is that of an introductory course for the training of parents, prepared and released by the International Sunday School Lesson Committee under the title of Hints on Child Training, as one of its elective courses for adult classes in the Sunday school. The editors of The Church School requested me to prepare a series of articles, following this outline, which might be used as a basis for study and discussion in parents' classes. In that form, the chapters of this book appeared in that publication, and have been used as a course of study by classes of parents in Sunday schools of various denominations, and as the basis for a year's programs and discussions by mothers' clubs and parent-teacher associations. It is hoped that the book may find a yet wider use by such classes and groups, as well as commend itself to the reading of individual fathers and mothers. My thanks are due to the editors of The Church School. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Child's Mind, Its Growth and Training: Being a Short Study of Some Processes of Learning and Teaching The reasons for writing this book are sufficiently set forth in the introduction. It is not a treatise on psychology, still less a new and full-fledged theory of education. Nor, on the other hand, is it a com plete handbook for teachers. It is rather an attempt to set forth in simple and, as far as possible, untech nical language some results already obtained from a study of mind growth as an organic process, and to establish a clear and definite connexion between those processes of learning which mind possesses, and the methods by which it should be taught and trained. These chapters will, it is hoped, enable the young teacher to use in practice the facts which he learns in his outline study of physiology and psy chology, and provide the experienced teacher with a framework on to which he may fit the results of his experience without committing himself to any one philosophic system. Perhaps at a time when the problems of education are so widely discussed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
