The book is nothing more and nothing else than this. The explanation and justification of a discussion so rigidly confined to the sphere of method, are to be sought in the peculiar situation in which we find ourselves. In view of this situation it is offered without misgiving or apology. It is generally conceded that we have fallen upon evil days as regards the popular knowledge and use of the Bible. In many respects our greatest book is as much lost to the people as in the days preceding the discovery of the "book of the law" in the reign of Josiah.
