Critics have often charged Edgar Allan Poe with sloppy writing. The reader is acquainted with various opinions about Edgar Allan Poe and his literary output. The author of the study discusses Poe’s personality, his lifestyle as well as his literary works, and provides the explanation why the figure of the writer aroused so much controversy among his contemporaries. The first charter describes the impact of Poe’s life experiences and his personal interests on his literature. The aim of the second chapter is to portray the American author’s fascination with human personality, mental disorders and analytical power of human mind. The last chapter investigates the two outstanding short stories by E. A. Poe – “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat.” The author of the study concentrates on the motifs of madness, death wish and the disintegration of human personality in the stories in question. The last part of the study discusses Poe’s role in literature as well as the author’s contribution to creating the dark tradition in America.

The thesis presents the types of characters whose behaviour is stigmatized with madness, brutality and alienation. The introduction portrays Poe’s and O’Connor’s profiles in comparison with their contemporary writers. The differences between Edgar Allan Poe and other representatives of Romanticism are discussed. Comparably, the reader is acquainted with these features of Flannery O’Connor’s innovative writing that enriched the literary tradition of American South. The introduction presents the major themes of E. A. Poe’s and F. O’Connor’s fiction, such as inner conflict, death wish, violence and mental deformities. The first chapter describes the impact of the writers’ life experiences and personal interests on their literary output. The chapter mentions the traumatic experiences from the authors’ lives, such as Poe’s early orphanhood and O’Connor’s combat with her incurable disease. The chapter is also devoted to the writers’ fascination with a sphere of human psyche and their interest in psychopathology. The aim of the second chapter is to depict the heroes whose depravation is so extreme that they lose the ability to decide about themselves and are subjected to the influence of a mysterious force to regain their internal balance. The force is meant to free these figures from their anguish and internal chaos. The third chapter presents the picture of intellectual in Poe’s and O’Connor’s short stories. This figure aims at exceeding the limits of human mind. As a result, he suppresses his spirit. The chapter portrays contrasting views of both authors on the issue of human intellect. The aim of the fourth chapter is to acquaint the reader with emotions of the characters who experience the conflict with the world and are driven to self-destruction. The conflict, whose main sources are evil and emotional devastation, is presented in such stories as “William Wilson” by E. A. Poe and “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” by F. O’Connor. The last part of the thesis presents the aims Poe and O’Connor had in portraying odd and deviant behaviour.

While Washington Irving is commonly seen as the creator of the short story, Edgar Allan Poe is regarded as the first to have realised its potential and the first to have created an aesthetical theory of the short story. This theory though, especially Poe’s depiction of the skilful artist and his/her perfect way of creating art, gave rise to many heated discussions, which strongly shaped the image of Poe. Thus he is likely to be seen as the cold-blooded, emotionally unaffected author who creates art on demand, contriving compositions with an unparalleled precision and brilliancy. Many critics therefore rather based their criticism on the life and the person of Edgar Allan Poe, instead of his contributions to the development of literature. This work strictly wants to avoid to draw any populist parallels between the author Poe and the person Poe. The first part of this term paper therefore deals with Poe’s literary theory as such. I will focus mainly on Poe’s major concerns of effect and the genres of poetry and prose. Furthermore I will pose the question, what is the actual matter of Poe’s theory, is it a profound concept or just a vague and hasty response to Emerson’s “The Poet”, with the mere purpose of provoking his contemporaries and thus to get attention? Since the formulation of a theory always raises the question of its applicability, especially on the part of its originator, the second part will scrutinise to what extent Edgar Allan Poe stuck to his own principles. Is there a discrepancy between theory and practice in the work of Edgar Allan Poe, and if so how can this be explained? His short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” will provide the paradigm, as it is in general, and even by Poe himself, considered one of his masterpieces. It is not the intention of said scrutiny to develop an overall-interpretation of the story, furthermore, the presented conclusions, drawn from the story’s symbolism, do not claim exclusiveness, they rather present possible ways of reading next to which other perspectives can coexist with just the same plausibility.

The poetry of Edgar Allan Poe has had a rough ride in America, as Emerson’s sneering quip about “The Jingle Man” testifies. That these poems have never lacked a popular audience has been a persistent annoyance in academic and literary circles; that they attracted the admiration of innovative poetic masters in Europe and especially France—notably Baudelaire, Mallarmé, and Valéry—has been further cause for embarrassment. Jerome McGann offers a bold reassessment of Poe’s achievement, arguing that he belongs with Whitman and Dickinson as a foundational American poet and cultural presence. Not all American commentators have agreed with Emerson’s dim view of Poe’s verse. For McGann, a notable exception is William Carlos Williams, who said that the American poetic imagination made its first appearance in Poe’s work. The Poet Edgar Allan Poe explains what Williams and European admirers saw in Poe, how they understood his poetics, and why his poetry had such a decisive influence on Modern and Post-Modern art and writing. McGann contends that Poe was the first poet to demonstrate how the creative imagination could escape its inheritance of Romantic attitudes and conventions, and why an escape was desirable.
