This book presents a stylistic framework for analysing embodiment in lyric texts. While the assumption that our minds are embodied underlies most approaches in cognitive stylistics (and beyond), a systematic account of the linguistic patterns through which the body may be manifested in poetic expression has not yet been provided. Aiming to fill this gap, the book focuses on contemporary lyric texts that prominently engage the senses in depicting past experiences. Drawing its tools mainly from Cognitive Grammar and research on conceptual metaphors and iconicity, the book investigates how sensory language gives rise to simulated embodied responses. In doing so, the book views poetic expression as a complex interplay of modalities and seeks to expand the concept of the lyric by incorporating digital poetry, song lyrics, performance poetry and lyrical prose among its case studies. The book furthermore brings in current cognitive scientific research on the workings of memory to the analysis of sensory memory, most centrally the psychological phenomenon of mental time travel. It will be of interest to students and scholars working on stylistics, literary studies, and multimodal and intermedial studies.

In treating the topic of the landscapes of stylistics, this book provides a series of chapters which deal not only with physical landscapes but also with social, mental, historical portraits of places, people and society. The chapters demonstrate that all texts project a worldview, even when the content appears to be only a physical description of the external world. The implication is that texts attempt to produce specific effects on the reader determined by the author’s worldview. Contents and effects, (namely mental and emotional states, behaviours), are thus inseparable. Identifying those effects and how they are produced is an eminently cognitive operation. The chapters analyse a variety of linguistic devices and cognitive mechanisms employed in producing the text and accounting for the effects achieved. This concise volume addresses the question of whether or not language, and its structure in literary discourses, determines individuals’ mental "vision," employing an innovative cross-disciplinary approach using readers’ drawings of their mental imagery during reading. The book engages in critical dialogue with the perceived wisdom in stylistics rooted in Roger Fowler’s seminal work on deixis and point of view to test whether or not this theory can fully account for what readers see in their mind's eye and how they see it. The work draws on findings from a study of English and Dutch across a range of literary texts, in which participants read literary text fragments and were then asked to immediately draw representations of what they had seen envisioned.
