This book analyses and challenges the metatheoretical framework which supports information-processing models of human speech perception. The first part consists of a review of speech perception research in the information-processing paradigm; an overview of the cognitivist philosophy from which this approach takes its justification; and an introduction to some relevant themes of phenomenological philosophy. The second half uses the phenomenological insights discussed to demonstrate some inadequacies of cognitivism; to show how these inadequacies underlie problems with the information-processing theory; and suggests an alternative framework with significant change of focus.

First published in 1987. This book is about the processing of information. The central domain of interest is face-to-face communication in which the speaker makes available both audible and visible characteristics to the perceiver. Articulation by the speaker creates changes in atmospheric pressure for hearing and provides tongue, lip, jaw, and facial movements for seeing. These characteristics must be processed by the perceiver to recover the message conveyed by the speaker. The speaker and perceiver must share a language to make communication possible; some internal representation is necessarily functional for the perceiver to recover the message of the speak.

Poets, academics, and those who simply speak a language are subject to mysterious intuitions about the perceptual qualities and emotional symbolism of the sounds of speech. Such intuitions are Reuven Tsur's point of departure in this investigation into the expressive effect of sound patterns, addressing questions of great concern for literary theorists and critics as well as for linguists and psychologists. Research in recent decades has established two distinct types of aural perception: a nonspeech mode, in which the acoustic signals are received in the manner of musical sounds or natural noises; and a speech mode, in which acoustic signals are excluded from awareness and only an abstract phonetic category is perceived. Here, Tsur proposes a third type of speech perception, a poetic mode in which some part of the acoustic signal becomes accessible, however faintly, to consciousness. Using Roman Jakobson's model of childhood acquisition of the phonological system, Tsur shows how the nonreferential babbling sounds made by infants form a basis for aesthetic valuation of language. He tests the intersubjective and intercultural validity of various spatial and tactile metaphors for certain sounds. Illustrating his insights with reference to particular literary texts, Tsur considers the relative merits of cognitive and psychoanalytic approaches to the emotional symbolism of speech sounds.

The purpose of the Symposium was to provide a meeting place for those working in the field of s·peech perception, whose main in terest is in the study of the perceptual processes in the deco ding of connected speech, hence the title Dynamic Aspects of Speech Perception. It was felt, after the meeting of the 8th ICA in London and the 2nd Speech Communication Seminar in Stockholm, 1974, that there should be an opportunity for an exchange of ideas on this topic with the emphasis on discussion and interpretation, rather than on the presentation of experimental results. The initiators set themselves up as a planning committee and asked the present editors to organize a symposium in Eindhoven at the Institute for Perception Research, which has a well established tradition in perceptual work. The present proceedings contain papers by contributors invited by the planning committee, as well as discussions. Most of the papers were circulated well in advance of the Symposium. We arranged the material in five sections: I. Theoretical Issues in Speech Perception Research II. Prosody in Speech Perception III. Some Storage Properties of Speech Perception IV. Auditory Analysis and Perception of Speech documents the proceedings of a symposium on Auditory Analysis and Perception of Speech co-sponsored by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, held in Leningrad, August 21-24, 1973. The purpose of the meeting was to advance the theory of speech perception in relation to auditory theory and speech signal models with some outlooks into the problem of automatic speech recognition. The book contains papers that were presented during the last three of the five sessions held. Session III on vowel perception includes studies on the variability of the code in connected speech; an auditory model of the perception of quasistationary vowels; and vowel processing at higher levels of the brain. Session IV on consonant perception includes papers that cover topics such as property detection, auditory segmentation, and consonant perception. Session V, which focuses on the prosodic features of speech, includes studies on temporal regularities of spoken Swedish; internal, auditory representation of syllable nucleus durations; and the factors that determine the timing of speech utterances.
