Excerpt from Defeat or Victory? The Strength of Britain Book This book, of the first edition of which one hundred thousand copies were sold in 20 days, has now been adopted by the Strength of Britain Movement, and is re-issued - as Defeat or Victory? For indeed, its publication as Defeat? Has brought Victory nearer. A few notes may here be permitted in reference to my original introduction which is hereafter reprinted. Its proof of the indeed self evident truth that the brewer does not produce milk, but destroys it, has now been officially confirmed by the Food Controller, who, in point blank contradiction of his colleague - supposed to be our Food Producer - now demands a reduction of 30 per cent, in the destruction of food by brewing, in order, he tells us, to favor the production of meat and milk. In this the Committee of the Royal Society now confirms him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Victorious Defeat: A Romance In the uncertain glory of a failing April day, Owen March stood before a door in the village of Judea, and let fall its knocker. His imagination, which went forward with a vague interest, as he rapped, to meet those with whom the opening of the door would make him acquainted, stood still with a mild shock when no footsteps answered his summons. But he lifted the reclining lamb again quite patiently, and waited once more for a response. As it did not come, he let his eyes wander down the street up which he had just come. It was a thoroughfare full of entertainment for one who saw it for the first time. March regarded it attentively for some minutes, during which he once more caused the little brass figure to make gentle inquiry of the dilatoriness of the house's inmates. When this knock also proved fruitless, he turned his glance toward the garden, endeavoring to bask beneath him in the stingy sunlight. As he looked, he was aware that the solitude was abruptly peopled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Victory in Defeat: The Agony of Warsaw and the Russian Retreat This little volume has been written with the intention of presenting as far as possible at this time, and within the information avail able to the writer, the Russian side of the great campaign which ended in the capture of War saw by the Germans, and was followed by the great Russian retreat. There are many assets in war as there are in peace, and the greatest among these is character. Efficiency, prepa ration, and science have their innings at the beginning of a conflict, but the one enduring asset which a nation has is the character of its people. If time be given for this to develop, then the end is certain. The great crisis in Russia was during that period when the psy chology of the nation was crystallizing, and when this had taken place the danger to Russia was largely passed. Certainly I would in no way minimize the strength, fortitude, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer.
