General Surgical Operations is a highly-praised and comprehensive textbook of operative surgery. It is a practical manual aimed at the surgeon who is about to carry out an operation, rather than just a description of the principles suitable for an examiner. Kirk’s General Surgical Operations continues to be aimed at a broad readership: the candidate preparing for the Intercollegiate FRCS in General Surgery or international equivalents; the trained surgeon faced, through necessity, with undertaking an infrequently performed procedure; and the many surgeons working in hospitals throughout the world without access to specialist services. It remains above all a practical text which will guide the surgeon in training, or one unfamiliar with a procedure, on how to perform it, but more importantly on how to manage the uncertainties which so often arise This is a ‘What to do’ book. Using it the reader can aspire to gain diagnostic, decision making and operative surgical competence with confidence. The book is written in a clear and direct style and providing explicit instructions using descriptive headings for easy reference. The contents covers standard routine operations in full; non-routine and rarely performed operations are included only where appropriate and in lesser detail The text includes advice on topics such as patient selection; preparation and access to the site of operation; how to accomplish the procedure; closing and aftercare Difficulties are highlighted and advice given on how to respond to unexpected findings Each procedure is fully described thus avoiding repetitions and cutting cross-references to a minimum Regular summaries of key points in the decision making process are included. This Sixth Edition is now known as Kirk’s General Surgical Operations in recognition of its distinguished founding editor, Professor RM Kirk, who is now Editor Emeritus on the textbook. The new editorial team for the Sixth Edition comprises a colorectal surgeon, a vascular surgeon and an orthopaedic surgeon The contents have been restructured and radically revised into 42 chapters, the majority of which have been completely rewritten. Laparoscopic techniques have been incorporated into all relevant chapters. All the illustrations have been redrawn to improve their clarity.

Principles and Practice of Surgery is the surgical companion textbook to the international medical bestseller Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine. It is a comprehensive textbook for both the surgical student and trainee, guiding the reader through key core surgical topics which are encountered throughout an integrated medical curriculum as well as in subsequent clinical practice. Although sharing the same format and style as Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine, this text is complete in itself, thus enabling the student to appreciate both the medical and surgical implications of diseases encountered in surgical wards. . A three-section textbook of surgical principles and regional clinical surgery. Superbly presented with line drawings, high quality radiographic images and colour photographs. Presented in similar form to its sister textbook Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine. Full online text version as part of Student Consult The contents have been restructured into three sections – Principles of Perioperative care, Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Surgical Specialties. Two new chapters have rationalised and amalgamated information on the Metabolic response to injury and Ethics and pre-operative considerations to avoid repetition. Throughout the text has been altered to reflect changes in understanding, evidence and practice, and to keep the contents in line with undergraduate and postgraduate surgical curricula A substantial number of new illustrations have been added to give better consistency and improved image quality. The evidence-based revision boxes that focus on major international guidelines have been thoroughly updated.

"When I review my own professional life and its many satisfactions, the greatest is not the surgical operations I have performed, nor the thousands of patients that I have cured, but the successful young surgeons whose instruction and training I have directed." (George Heuer, 1882-1950). This is very true of my four-decade-long surgical career too. In the process of instruction and training of the young surgeon, I have had the habit of noting down various little bits of surgical, medical, and general facts to help me remember details, and recall, of the same. These have been taken from books and journals read, as well as noted down from conferences and meetings attended. Entries were made into little yearly diaries. Over the last two decades, I have used these as a good source of my material for the numerous surgical quiz shows I have conducted for the relevant audiences (mainly surgical postgraduates and residents of the MS and DNB general surgical streams) at City, State, and National levels. Also, as part of my Quiz shows are numerous 'filler slides' of surgical aphorisms, myths, and humour, making it into a whole session of 'Quizotainment'. I have now attempted to put together all these surgical and medical facts into some sort of order and grouping to help easy reference and retrieval. I have included surgical aphorisms and humour, too, to offer an angle of fun while assimilating the fact, hence the title Fact and Fun in Surgery. It is important to note that the vast majority of the facts and quotes are NOT my own, and for many of them, I have not been able to trace their origin. I immensely thank all these unmentioned contributors for having shared their facts in the surgical literature or discussions. I have listed the broad references of the books in which the majority of these facts and fun quips are mentioned, but the list is not complete. It is also relevant to note that these fact listings are not exhaustive, nor do they cover all disciplines of medicine. They are predominantly surgical, with a few from the grey areas between surgery and other specialities. By compiling this book of surgical and medical facts, I do hope to fill a small void in surgical learning at the student level. I have always maintained that a person with no sense of humour has no sense at all and so used the aphorism, the pun, and the light-hearted wit, judiciously, to cool down the burden of memorisation, and later, to help in the recall. The combination of fact with fun definitely helps retentiveness and recollection of the fact. The book will, perhaps, help teachers too, in their preparations for teaching sessions.

Evidence Based Surgery written by Achilles Thoma and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-20 with Medical categories.

The purpose of this book specifically is to teach surgeons (academic or community), surgical fellows and surgical residents regardless of the surgical specialty, the skills to appraise what they read in the surgical literature. Surgeons need to be able to understand what they read before applying the conclusions of a surgical article to their practice. As most surgeons do not have the extra training in health research methodology, understanding how the research was done, how to interpret the results and finally deciding to apply them to the patient level is indeed a difficult task. Chapters explain the methodological issues pertaining to the various study designs reported in the surgical literature. Most chapters begin with a clinical scenario with uncertain course of action with which most surgeons are struggling. Readers are taught how to search the literature for the best evidence that will answer the surgical problem under discussion. An identified article that seems relevant to the problem you are investigating can be appraised by addressing 3 key questions: 1). Is the study I am reading valid? 2). What are the results of this study? 3). Can I apply these results to my patients? While the primary goal of Evidence-Based Surgery is to teach surgeons how to appraise the surgical literature, an added benefit is that the concepts explained here may help research-minded surgeons produce higher quality research.
