THE SVALBARD PASSAGE is a rare work of fiction: the power and dramatic intensity of the writing are matched by the authenticity of the writers' extraordinary knowledge of political reality; the result is a work of imagination and prophecy. Readers of John Le Carr, Richard Condon, Ken Follett, and Robert Ludlum will find it irresistible. The mysterious deaths of an international expedition of ice climbers on the remote face of the Spitsbergen glacier triggers what may be the first pre-emptive U.S. nuclear strike against the Soviet Union. The chain of events that follow moves swiftly and brilliantly from cosmopolitan, placid Oslo to the war-game rooms of the Pentagon and reaches a terrifying climax on the icy wastes of Spitsbergen, above the northern coast of Norway-and the Svalbard Passage. Caught in a terrifying net of brinksmanship are a worldly, elegant Norwegian diplomat; a fiery and beautiful German journalist; an uncommitted American pacifist; a ruthless CIA agent; and an equally ruthless Russian, a pawn of the KGB. Unknowingly, acting out of their private compulsions, they bring the world to the edge of global disaster.Through the weave of this richly atmospheric novel of suspense runs the stormy, sensual love story of Martin and Ulrike, lovers who come to maturity in the face of annihilation.EDITORIAL REVIEWS"Wryly drawn characters...absorbing."-Kirkus Reviews "Tense drama...spectacular."-St. Louis Post Dispatch "Riveting and fascinating."-Lerner Newspapers "An absorbing tale...the stuff of which movies are made."-Rocky Mountain News "Crackles ... a rousing good job." -Akron Beacon-Journal

Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this book provides ready access to legislation and practice concerning the environment in Norway. A general introduction covers geographic considerations, political, social and cultural aspects of environmental study, the sources and principles of environmental law, environmental legislation, and the role of public authorities. The main body of the book deals first with laws aimed directly at protecting the environment from pollution in specific areas such as air, water, waste, soil, noise, and radiation. Then, a section on nature and conservation management covers protection of natural and cultural resources such as monuments, landscapes, parks and reserves, wildlife, agriculture, forests, fish, subsoil, and minerals. Further treatment includes the application of zoning and land-use planning, rules on liability, and administrative and judicial remedies to environmental issues. There is also an analysis of the impact of international and regional legislation and treaties on environmental regulation. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable resource for environmental lawyers handling cases affecting Norway. Academics and researchers, as well as business investors and the various international organizations in the field, will welcome this very useful guide, and will appreciate its value in the study of comparative environmental law and policy.

Small Powers At Sea written by Finn Laursen and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-27 with Law categories.

Small Powers at Sea presents an analysis of the marine policies of Denmark, Norway and Sweden from the First UN Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1958 until the conclusion of the Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1982. The main substantive chapters cover security aspects, continental shelf policies, fisheries, shipping and marine environment as well as deep seabed mining. The study is comparative and conducted from a political science perspective, discussing how to explain the rather divergent Scandinavian marine policies. A state-centric rational actor model can explain much of the variance, but other factors, including cognitive ones and the role of domestic politics, must be included to obtain a fuller understanding of Scandinavian policies over time and across issue areas.

As the Age of Exploration came to a close, the world seemed to be a significantly smaller place than it once was, with more major landmasses identified on the global map. Yet questions and unknowns remained and details had yet to be filled in. Armed with greater knowledge and better equipment than their predecessors, explorers in the late Renaissance and Enlightenment eras took up the reins, with some discovering new routes and lands still while others carefully surveyed or settled lands already known. This lively volume details the lives of such individuals as Henry Hudson, Vitus Bering, James Cook, and Daniel Boone, among many others, as well as the explorations and discoveries of which they were a part.
