The Synchronization of National Policies shows how it is possible that there is remarkable uniformity in the policies that the nation-states adopt, although there is no world government. Mainstream research attributes such global governance to the influence of leading countries, to functional requirements created by capitalism and technological development, or to international organizations. This book argues that to understand how national policies are synchronized we need to realize that the global population forms a single global tribe of moderns, divided into some 200 clans called nations. While previous research on the world culture of moderns has focused on the diffusion of ideas, this book concentrates on the active role of local actors, who introduce global models and domesticate them to nation-states. In national policymaking, actors justify new policies by international comparisons, by the successes and failures of models adopted in other countries, and by building and appealing to the authority of international organizations. Consequently, national policies are synchronized with each other. Yet, because of the way such domestication of global trends takes place, citizens retain and reproduce the understanding that they follow a sovereign national trajectory. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, world culture theory, globalization, international relations, and political science.

Notions of social change are often divided into local versus international. But what actually happens at the national level—where policies are ultimately made and implemented—when policy-making is interdependent worldwide? How do policy-makers take into account the prior choices of other countries? Far more research is needed on the process of interdependent decision-making in the world polity. This book is an open access. Law is a set of rules made to foster regularity and guarantee safety and certainty for citizens. The existence of Law is intended to maintain social order and control societal changes into something as expected. Both law and humanity are inextricable and they work in harmony. Therefore, the formulation and enforcement must take place simultaneously. This view is relevant to the idea of Prof. Satjipto Raharjo in his progressive legal theory, believing that law is born for human beings, not the other way around. In other words, the law should keep moving to maintain the people’s welfare and to ensure that the certainty, justice, and utility of the law are guaranteed. Recently, the world has been faced with seemingly unstoppable humanitarian crises. Prolonged conflict has caused severe losses affecting physical, economic, and psychological conditions, and no diplomatic and repressive actions have managed to stop this issue. In such a situation, the law should play its role in protecting those affected by this inhuman conflict. However, international and national laws seem to be left as nothing but mere meaningless written rules that fail to address this existing problem. In such a situation, humanity is being disrupted, which it sees a change of meaning triggering a critical situation and blurring it. This situation also indicates that these days, humanity is facing challenges. Departing from this perspective, the Faculty of Law Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang holds the 5th International Conference of Law and Call for Papers with the Theme Redefining Humanity Values as the Basis of Legal Reasoning: Challenges in the Disruption Era. From this conference, we expect to welcome more ideas of redefining the significance of humanity toward the law in the existing challenges.

The Arab Spring and recent popular uprisings that have taken place in many Arab countries since the end of 2010 highlight the urgent need for economic policy reorientation in these countries. This book addresses key issues relevant to the contemporary economic realities of the Arab economies; including policy space, generation of more productive and decent employment, social justice and poverty alleviation, regional integration and the common destiny of the Arab people, and the failure of the structural adjustment programs recommended by the Bretton Woods institutions and implemented in these countries in the last three decades.
