Science is remarkably reliable. It puts people on the moon, performs laser eye surgery, tells us about ancient civilizations and species, and predicts the future of our climate. What underwrites this reliability? This book argues that the standard answers--the scientific method, rigour, and objectivity--are insufficient for the job. Here we propose a new model of science which places its products front and centre. In The Tangle of Science we show how any reliable piece of science is underpinned by a vast, diverse, and thick network of other scientific products. In doing so we bring back into focus areas of science that have been long neglected, emphasizing how every product, from the screws that hold the space shuttle together, to ways of measuring the consumer price index, to Einstein's theory of general relativity, work together to support results we can trust.

Identifying Future Proof Science written by Peter Vickers and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-31 with Science categories.
Is science getting at the truth? The sceptics - those who spread doubt about science - often employ a simple argument: scientists were 'sure' in the past, and then they ended up being wrong. Through a combination of historical investigation and philosophical-sociological analysis, Identifying Future-Proof Science defends science against this potentially dangerous scepticism. Indeed, we can confidently identify many scientific claims that are future-proof: they will last forever, so long as science continues. How do we identify future-proof claims? This appears to be a new question for science scholars, and not an unimportant one. Peter Vickers argues that the best way to identify future-proof science is to avoid any attempt to analyse the relevant first-order scientific evidence, instead focusing purely on second-order evidence. Specifically, a scientific claim is future-proof when the relevant scientific community is large, international, and diverse, and at least 95% of that community would describe the claim as a 'scientific fact'. In the entire history of science, no claim meeting these criteria has ever been overturned, despite enormous opportunity.

Too often conversations on Science and Christianity skate over much deeper assumptions--or perceptions--on the nature and interpretation of Scripture, and the nature of science and of God. Instead, the rhetoric goes quickly towards contentious issues, like evolution, global warming, or genetic engineering, without establishing a framework of mutual understanding. Consequently, "conversations" can take place between people who completely misunderstand each other because those foundations have not been clearly articulated. In this introductory book you are invited on a journey of discovery, one that makes us self-aware of our starting assumptions. It is only from a framework of critical engagement with both science and the Bible that contemporary issues and the needs of the church and society can be addressed. While the Creator is one who brings order, this book also reminds us that untamed chaos also has a God-ordained place within creation. The author explores the element of chance that seems to be at the heart of nature and shows how this can be incorporated constructively within Christian thinking. Nature is not mere mechanism and is more "open" than we might first think. This means that miracles are scientifically plausible and prayer can really change things. . . .
Science And The Theory Of God

Science And The Theory Of God written by Xavier L. Suarez and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-26 with Science categories.
The supposed tension between religion and science is explored in this book in a most anecdotal and refreshing way. From the beginning, the author, Xavier L. Suarez, makes no assumptions about the existence of God, or the nature of God, if he/she/it exists. Instead, Suarez engages the reader in an objective discussion of what empirical and social science says about the likelihood of an infinite big banger or first cause who propelled the universe about fourteen billion years ago, endowing it with matter, space-time, and order. Moving very quickly from astrophysics to history, psychology and sociology, Suarez looks at the God theory in a most entertaining way. Questions like why bad things happen to good people? and whether our species is just a more intelligent edition of animals are tackled in a conversational style that is readable and even fun. In the end, the author concludes that the God theory is quite consistent with the latest discoveries of science.

Featuring research from the 2017 research symposium of the Association for Women in Mathematics, this volume presents recent findings in pure mathematics and a range of advances and novel applications in fields such as engineering, biology, and medicine. Featured topics include geometric group theory, generalized iterated wreath products of cyclic groups and symmetric groups, Conway-Coxeter friezes and mutation, and classroom experiments in teaching collegiate mathematics. A review of DNA topology and a computational study of learning-induced sequence reactivation during sharp-wave ripples are also included in this volume. Numerous illustrations and tables convey key results throughout the book. This volume highlights research from women working in academia, industry, and government. It is a helpful resource for researchers and graduate students interested in an overview of the latest research in mathematics.
