The Task of the Interpreter offers a new approach to what it means to interpret a text, and reconciles the possibility of multiple interpretations with the need to consider the author's intention. Vandevelde argues that interpretation is both an act and an event: It is an act in that interpreters, through the statements they make, implicitly commit themselves to justifying their positions, if prompted. It is an event in that interpreters are situated in a cultural and historical framework and come to a text with questions, concerns, and methods of which they are not fully conscious. These two aspects make interpretation a negotiation of meaning. The Task of the Interpreter provides an interdisciplinary investigation of textual interpretation including biblical hermeneutics (Gregory the Great's Homilies on Ezekiel), translation (Homer's The Odyssey), and literary fictions (Grass's Dog Years and Sabato's On Heroes and Tombs). Interpreting in Interaction provides an account of interpreter-mediated communication, exploring the responsibilities of the interpreter and the expectations of both the interpreter and of other participants involved in the interaction. The book examines ways of understanding the distribution of responsibility of content and the progression of talk in interpreter-mediated institutional face-to-face encounters in the community interpreting context. Bringing attention to discursive and social practices prominent in modern society but largely unexplored in the existing literature, the book describes and explains real-life interpreter-mediated conversations as documented in various public institutions, such as hospitals and police stations. The data show that the interpreter's prescribed role as a non-participating, non-person does not -and cannot - always hold true. The book convincingly argues that this in one sense exceptional form of communication can be used as a magnifying glass in the grounded study of face-to-face institutional interaction more generally. Beginning with a discussion of the concept of role in general and then to an overview of the research into human communication dynamics, this book explores the impact of introducing an interpreter into a complex and sometimes sensitive interactive setting. Traditionally interpreters have been taught that they should not influence the communication process and, to minimize their impact, they should maintain an impersonal, professional distance. They should not interact with the interlocutors other than to interpret the meaning of their utterances; these behaviours are reinforced by the Codes of Practice adopted by many of the national interpreting organizations. These traditional behaviours often hinder rather than facilitate communication between interlocutors who don't share a common language. The book looks at three dimensions of interactions: the axes of presentation of 'self', participant alignment and interaction management. It demonstrates, with real-world examples, how different interpreting scenarios require the interpreter to play very different roles. It is the variations along these different axes that create 'role-space', a term used to denote the parameters that inform the interpreter's behaviour.
