Excerpt from Pictures in the Tate Gallery In the dawning years of the nineteenth century art was not regarded as a forcible factor in the public weal. It was a period Of artistic uniformity marked by a singular want of variety of outlook. Many pictures Were painted, but there was little distinctive British art, if we understand the phrase in its full significance. Groups Of historical and genre painters clung to traditional ideals; the colour of their pictures was ruined by the use Of bitumen; their surfaces were stippled to one glossy regularity of texture, while their subjects were chosen with a finer regard for sentiment than for truth. The supreme Object Of the approved painter was to fulfil conditions that had become classic. Turner and Constable, the interpreters of landscape, alone handled their paint in such a way that they depicted Nature in a living and truthful guise. Excerpt from The Tate Gallery The collection of paintings in the Tate Gallery may not be a perfect representation of the whole of British art, justly balanced, equally strong in all periods, but it does serve as a conspectus by which the general direction, and the lines on which English painting has grown, from Hogarth to the present day, may be studied. Art in England has developed mainly by the operation of the forces of reaction, punctuated, as it were, by influence from abroad. The rise and fall in the course of its progress may be easily perceived the heights are not more clearly marked than the depressions. It is convenient to make Van Dyck the starting-point, for the work of the Flemish master dominated the English School for nearly one hundred years from the middle of the seventeenth century, and his attractive if artificial methods and style were exploited by most of the English painters. In the hands of Lely, Kneller, and others the practice of painting gradually degenerated - the usual result of adopting second-hand methods - into the driest convention. A reaction from it - a breaking away and return to nature - became inevitable. The appearance of William Hogarth, as the pioneer of the realists, marked the inauguration of a period of individualistic painters, drawing inspiration from nature rather than from the work of the older masters, although still far from complete emancipation, and still strongly under the influences of an accepted and fashionable style. Excerpt from Tate's Modern Cambist: A Manual of Foreign Exchanges and Bullion With the Monetary Systems of the World and Foreign Weights and Measures The science of exchange, or, to use the old word, cambistry, has always been a subject of great importance. When countries traded with each other it was necessary for them to have a medium by which they could exchange goods. From the earliest periods in the worlds history gold and silver formed the medium of exchange. There was also a substitute found in the shape of bank-notes, which, within certain limits, were a convenient method for discharging debts between individuals. In addition to these modes of payment bills of exchange have been utilised for the same purpose. These documents were used by Italian merchants as early as the twelfth century, and circulate largely throughout Southern Europe. With regard to international trade, we find, however, that the final adjustment of debts must be in the shape of bullion. We have, therefore, movements of bullion from one country to another for the purpose of discharging international indebtedness. Now, bullion exists either in the shape of gold or silver, and is sold in the market like any other commodity, but with this important distinction, that a fixed price has been given for gold, so that fluctuations in price are somewhat limited. Silver, however, fluctuates considerably, in accordance with the laws of supply and demand. In consequence of great production throughout the world the price has fallen in recent years from 60d. to 25d. per once. This great fall in value has been the cause of many countries adopting a gold standard, in order to avoid fluctuations in the price of commodities, and also to enable such countries to trade more successfully with those nations which have that standard. Haegue Yang written by Haegue Yang and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Installations (Art) categories.

Accompanying our 2020-21 Haegue Yang exhibition at Tate St Ives, this beautiful exhibition book focuses on the context of the Cornish landscape and its ancient archaeological heritage as an important point of departure for Yang. A vital expansion of the ideas that punctuate the Tate St Ives exhibition, the exhibition catalogue brings together installation photography and new texts on the artist. Yang's work combines materials, theories and cultural references to make astute and surprising connections between local contexts and wider geographies and histories. Recurring themes of migration, postcolonial diasporas, political struggle and social mobility underpin Yang's research, culminating in a body of work that is an apposite comment on our own time. Born in South Korea in 1971, Haegue Yang is renowned for creating immersive environments from a diverse range of materials. Yang's sculptures and installations conjure abstract narratives which play with our sensory pre-conceptions of scent, sound, light and tactility. Often using recognisable household objects, her work liberates forms from their functional context and applies new connotations and meanings to them. Interweaving industrially made objects with labour intensive and craft-based processes, Yang articulates her interest in folk and pagan cultures, and their deep connection with seasonal rituals in relation to natural phenomena.

Excerpt from Pictures in the Tate Gallery It is probably with a sense of surprise that many visitors to the Tate Gallery read upon the covers of the official catalogue, "Pictures and Sculpture in the National Gallery of British Art." We remember dimly that this was the original designation of Sir Henry Tate's gift to the nation. But the academic name only lingers officially; from the very first it was discarded by the populace. Upon the day the Gallery was opened they coupled the building with the name of its founder, and to the majority of people it still remains the Tate Gallery. And in this instance the popular verdict was right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Life and Letters of Stopford Brooke, Vol. 2 Professional teachers of religion are apt to look at such matters too exclusively from their own point of view, and if they are not moved from their places, to draw the inference that nothing is moving in the world. We Shall get a truer measure of Brooke's action if we look away from its ecclesiastical bearings and consider it as an event in the moral history of the times.
