Excerpt from The Tay Bridge: Its and Construction The most notable dificulties in connection with the construction of the Tay Bridge were caused by the boisterous character of the weather in the river, and the nature of its bottom. Each of these circumstances by itself would have rendered the use of ordinary scaffolding and staging impracticable. Had this not been the case, the cylinders might have been built, lowered, and steadied from a reliable staging, and the girders, during their erection, rested on secure scaffolding till they were finally connected to the piers. Everything would thus have been plain and straightforward. No unpreventable accidents would have happened, and cost, as well as time of com pletion, would have been predicted to a nicety. The Bridge would only have differed from a thousand similar structures all over the world by the fact that it is the longest of them all.
