Excerpt from The Teacher Speaks The second aspect has to do with the personal preparation of the teacher. Some attention is given to the general problems of scholarship, and in these instances the part that effective speech can play is set forth. In developing this aspect of the text a great deal of emphasis is placed upon the speech needs of the teacher. To help the student become competent in this area, the discussion is supplemented by exercises and suggested ways of self-evaluation and evaluation by colleagues. It is hoped that such practice will firmly establish the habit of critical self-analysis as a means to continued improvement. The third aspect deals with the problems of interpersonal communications in out-of-class situations as they affect the teacher's professional success. Emphasis is placed upon the employment interview and other types of personal conference, including the counseling conference. Certainly the skills in volved in sharing ideas in face-to-face situations play a large part in the teacher's total effectiveness. Contacts with parents, community leaders, and school personnel represent occasions in which the teacher's speech personality is a major factor in his success. The fourth aspect is perhaps the key to teaching success: the continued growth and improvement of communicational ability. Though other factors are necessarily involved, the level of communication is an index of the level of learning. All teachers are concerned with the quality of the student's speech. They must be able to recognize difficulties, deviations, and maladjustments related to speech abilities. This aspect leans for its technical detail upon the earlier discussion of the prin ciples underlying the quality of the teacher's speech, but the principles are directly applied to the student in this phase of the discussion. Further, in order that the classroom itself can be actively a learning laboratory, many suggestions are made for the use of speech and for possible speaking assignments in functional speaking situations. Excerpt from The Teacher IN this dawning of a better day for the world the teacher is coming into a fuller measure of recognition. No longer is he living and working on the fringe of things, but nearer the centre; and no longer is his work thought of as tame and incidental, but rather as vital and essential. Civiliza tion has taken him into its confidence and is giving into his hands a piece of work that no one else can do so well. His work is not now detached from the activities of life. Rather, it is woven into the warp and woof of life itself. He is no lineal de scendant of Squeers, or Gradgrind, or the Hoosier Schoolmaster, or Ichabod Crane; but in these types he recognizes the hazy myths dwelling in the twilight zone of our misconceptions of the school and the teacher. Excerpt from A Class-Room Conversation Book We all agree that the object in learning a living language is the ability to speak it. To reach this end, the appeal should be made to the ear and not to the eye. It is due to the recognition of this principle that the German teachers in teaching English and French, and the English teachers in teaching German and French, are meeting with so much success. Every successful teacher of language tries to make his pupils speak the new language as much as possible. Excerpt from Talks to Sunday School Teachers This book is in a sense a supplement to The Pupil and the Teacher, as it is my response to the request that I write in fuller and more con crete detail concerning certain topics briefly re ferred to in that book. It has, however, a body Of its own, and is published in the hope that parents and Sunday school teachers may be helped by these talks to gain further insight into the psychology of boys and girls and a better understanding of some of the pedagogical problems involved in their re ligious education. That it may be the better available for use by teacher-training or parents' classes, or as a basis for a series of Sunday school Workers' conferences, questions for discussion and a brief bibliography are appended to each chapter. Excerpt from Twenty Talks to Teachers Twenty talks TO teachers is an epitome of some of the discussions used by the author in teachers' insti tutes. It is not a profound book. It was not intended to be. Its object is to call the attention of young teachers to some of the every day conditions and problems which they must solve for themselves. The average term of service of teachers is little'o'ver three years, hence the great mass of teachers are young in service. A number of these have expressed themselves as being pleased with the discussions in institutes, especially so because they were plain homely talks rather than learned discussions. Perhaps these and others may appreciate them as well in the printed form. No one is expected to agree with all that is said. If the topics are suggestive to young teachers, if the book helps them over a1few of the hard places, if it sets them thinking on some topics, if the advice that is given proves sound, and if it should encourage a few to deeper study, better preparation and broader reading, it will have done well. Trusting that it may form the basis of profitable discussions in teachers' institutes and meetings it is sub mitted to the great body of young teachers whose zeal, enthusiasm and optimism, has done so much in the past, is doing yet, and will continue to do so much for our schools and out of whose work must grow in the future a worthy profession of teaching. Excerpt from Sunday Talks to Teachers Even from a child's point of View, this is a fair description of the work of a good school. One small picture it brings to my mind is that Of arithmetic lessons in the Upper Fourth when I was thirteen years Old. I had studied decimals before I went to school, and had found it like groping among hard Sharp Objects in a dark room. The school course now threw into these dark places such a flood of light that I moved securely in a transformed world. I did not use those words, but for years afterwards I cared chiefly for that quality in a teacher, - the power of making things clear. Since then I have come to value other kinds of light also: that which comes, for' instance, from the wide knowledge or the keen imagination of the teacher or the writer, or from his power of Inspiration. But the precious book or speech presents itself to me still in the same way, as new light; as making me see some thing that I had not seen.
