Excerpt from Twenty Talks to Teachers Twenty talks TO teachers is an epitome of some of the discussions used by the author in teachers' insti tutes. It is not a profound book. It was not intended to be. Its object is to call the attention of young teachers to some of the every day conditions and problems which they must solve for themselves. The average term of service of teachers is little'o'ver three years, hence the great mass of teachers are young in service. A number of these have expressed themselves as being pleased with the discussions in institutes, especially so because they were plain homely talks rather than learned discussions. Perhaps these and others may appreciate them as well in the printed form. No one is expected to agree with all that is said. If the topics are suggestive to young teachers, if the book helps them over a1few of the hard places, if it sets them thinking on some topics, if the advice that is given proves sound, and if it should encourage a few to deeper study, better preparation and broader reading, it will have done well. Trusting that it may form the basis of profitable discussions in teachers' institutes and meetings it is sub mitted to the great body of young teachers whose zeal, enthusiasm and optimism, has done so much in the past, is doing yet, and will continue to do so much for our schools and out of whose work must grow in the future a worthy profession of teaching. Excerpt from Talks With Pupils: A Hand Book for Teachers of Our Public Schools The present age demands better teachers. A great number of teachers in the district schools have been pupils in only district schools. They read books on "Theory of Teaching" and "School Management," and honestly try to follow the plans therein elaborated, yet many of them fail. Good books for teachers are plentiful. No doubt any work on teaching which is read and thought over is of great benefit to the teacher who strives to find the way to teach. But it does seem that we need more books to show how to do. The author does not think that there are too many books of theory, but he does think there are too few of practice. In this little book the writer has given fifty talks with pupils, most of which in substance have been a part of his school work. He has found them to be of excellent service. Other strong teachers have used some of these talks and they thought so well of them that they have made similar exercises a feature of their schools. Knowing the value of this line of work by a long experience in district schools and in training district school teachers, the author gives these talks to the great army of teachers hoping thereby to benefit some of them-especially those young in the work. Teachers Meetings written by H. Clay Trumbull and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-14 with Education categories.

Excerpt from Teachers'-Meetings: Their Necessity and Methods The "teachers'-meeting, as that term is employed in America, is a weekly gathering of the teachers of the Sunday-school for conference over the next lesson which they are to teach to their scholars. In Great Britain, such a gathering is known as the "preparation class." It matters little, however, what the gathering is called, if only its nature and purpose be understood while its discussion is in progress. Not every Sunday-school has a teachers'-meeting; yet without a teachers'-meeting there can be no true Sunday-school. This paradox represents a truth that cannot safely be lost sight of in considering the Sunday-school and its needs. Excerpt from A Talk on Teaching, Given at a Conference of Members of the Instructing Staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on March 20, 1908 These considerations may be summed up by saying that problem-solving is by far the most effective means we have of developing mental power. We must make such work as large as possible a part of our courses, making place for it by the omission of much other material, important though it may be. We must insist on independent work in the solution of problems, but in doing it we must be ready to give assistance to the individual student. Our examina tions Should be made a test of his power to handle problems connected with the subject rather than a test of his knowl edge; and the record we give him should depend mainly on his success in this direction. Excerpt from Talks to Teachers, on Psychology: And to Students Dents on Some of Ideals I wish I were able to make the second, 'on a Cer tain Blindness in Human Beings, ' more impressive. It is more than the mere piece Of sentimentalism which it may seem to some readers. It connects itself with a definite View Of the world and Of our moral relations to the same. Those who have done me the honor Of reading my volume Of philosophic essays will recognize that I mean the pluralistic or individualistic philosophy. According to that philos Ophy, the truth is too great for any one actual mind, even though that mind be dubbed 'the Absolute, ' to know the whole Of it. The facts and worths Of life need many cognizers to take them in. There is no point Of view absolutely public and universal. Pri vate and uncommunicable perceptions always remain over, and the worst Of it is that those who look for them from the outside never know where. Excerpt from Fifty Years a Teacher The chapters which make up this sketch were written at request of the editor for The School Bulletin, and attracted so wide and so favorable attention that by consent of the author they are republished in this form. Few New York teachers have had so long, so varied, so creditable, and so in fluential a career as Mr. Whitney, and it is felt that this record of his services is of value not only to his friends as a personal remembrance, but to the public as giving glimpses of the educational history of New York during the past half century.
