Excerpt from The Teaching Botanist a Manual of Information Upon Botanical Instruction Including Outlines and Directions for a Synthetic General Course This is a book of ideals. In its pages I have tried to set forth the chief factors involved in the best of botani cal teaching, well believing that it is good for each per son to hitch his wagon to a star. It is true that we may never be able to attain to these, any more than to other ideals, for all alike they are veritable will 0' the wisps which waft themselves farther away just as we reach forth to grasp them. However, 'this matters but little, since man is made in such fashion that pursuit holds more joy than possession, and visions more charm than realities. That we cannot attain to our ideals is, therefore, the least of objections against them. They have, how ever, at least one positive merit. They can serve as a perennial balm for the soul, or a kind of a Spiritual ra dium, sending forth a perpetual emanation to keep work and life aglow. Besides, they may be made to do service in practical ways, as definite goals to be aimed at, or as standards of value to which we may point those objectors who question the aim of our efforts. So, from all points of View ideals are in place, and in generous measure, in a book that is given to teaching. Excerpt from The Teaching Botanist: A Manual of Information Upon Botanical Instruction; Together With Outlines and Directions for a Comprehensive Elementary Course IT may appear at first sight that the title of this work is of wider scope than its contents. Addressed broadly to the teaching botanist, and professing to serve as a manual of information upon botanical instruction, it nevertheless deals chiefly with one phase of botanical teaching; namely, with its elementary presentation as a science. Yet in this it represents the actual condition of the problems in botanical teaching at the present day. On the one hand, our university and advanced college teaching, carried on as investigation or in that spirit, represents a well-nigh ideal relation of teacher to student; and on the other, the botanical part of nature study in the lower schools has hardly yet begun to attract the attention it deserves. It is just between these two, between advanced college and lower school work, that is, in elementary courses in Botany treated as a science, whether in high school or college, that the present problems lie. Here is the real centre of discus sion, effort, and advance in botanical teaching to-day. This part of botanical teaching is now in a state of wonderfully rapid expansion and transition. Three causes are contributing to this result: first, the natural reaction from its former extreme backwardness second, a widening recognition of the value of the sciences, of which Botany is a leading one, in general education.
