Messiaen S Musical Techniques The Composer S View And Beyond written by Gareth Healey and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-22 with Music categories.
Despite Messiaen's position as one of the greatest technical innovators of the twentieth century, his musical language has not been comprehensively defined and investigated. The composer's 1944 theoretical study, The Technique of My Musical Language, expounds only its initial stages, and while his posthumously published Traité de rythme, de couleur, et d'ornithologie contains detailed explanations of selected techniques, in most cases the reader is left to define these more precisely by observing them in the context of Messiaen's analyses of his own works. Technical processes are nevertheless in many cases the primary components of a work or movement. For instance, personnages dominate 'Joie du sang des étoiles' from the Turangalîla-symphonie, and in certain cases, such as 'L'échange' from the Vingt regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus, the process (asymmetric augmentation) is the only structuring element present. Given this reliance on idiosyncratic techniques, clear comprehension of the music is impossible without a detailed knowledge of Messiaen's methods. Gareth Healey charts their development and interconnections, considers their relationship with formal structures, and applies them in refined and extended form to works for which Messiaen himself left no published analysis.

Although canons pervade music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, they have not received proportionate attention in the musicological literature. The contributions in this book shed light on canons and canonic techniques from a wide range of perspectives, such as music theory and analysis, compositional and performance practice, palaeography and notation, as well as listening expectations and strategies. Especially in the case of riddle canons, insights from other disciplines such as literature, theology, iconography, emblematics, and philosophy have proved crucial for a better understanding and interpretation of how such pieces were created. The essays extend from the early period of canonic writing to the seventeenth century, ending with three contributions concerned with the reception history of medieval and Renaissance canons in music and writings on music from the Age of Enlightenment to the present. This book was awarded the Special Citation by the Society for Music Theory in November 2008.

Comprehensive Musical Analysis written by John D. White and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-01-01 with Music categories.
Now available in paperback! Evolved from the author's widely used book, The Analysis of Music (Prentice-Hall, 1975; 2nd. ed. Scarecrow Press, 1984), Comprehensive Music Analysis is a guide for acquiring the tools of musical analysis, skills which are essential to every serious musician and musical scholar. The new volume presents material on Heinrich Schenker and reductive linear analysis and additional material on set theoretical analysis. White's theoretical writing is characterized by logic of methodology, clarity of organization, and lucidity of prose. It should be eagerly received by theorists seeking a comprehensive view of current methodology. White's approach to current theoretical dogma is not uncritical. As Gerald Warfield (General Editor of the recent English translation of Schenker's Der Freie Satz) says in his Preface to White's new book,'...we begin to glimpse a powerful tool which does not exist in any single school of theory or musicology, but which draws upon any and all nethodologies as required by the analyst. The opinions in this book are strong. Indeed, there is material which may disturb the dogmatic, yet the author's intentions are clear. White invites you to take your cue for analysis from the compositions themselves rather than from dogma.' Replete with musical examples, charts, and diagrams, the book is more than a treatise on analysis, it is a valuable tool for the advanced student of music as well as the musical scholar.

The New Music written by Theodor W. Adorno and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-26 with Philosophy categories.
A year after the end of the Second World War, the first International Summer Course for New Music took place in the Kranichstein Hunting Lodge, near the city of Darmstadt in Germany. The course, commonly referred to later as the Darmstadt course, was intended to familiarize young composers and musicians with the music that, only a few years earlier, had been denounced as degenerate by the Nazi regime, and it soon developed into one of the most important events in contemporary music. Having returned to Germany in 1949 from exile in the United States, Adorno was a regular participant at Darmstadt from 1950 on. In 1955 he gave a series of lectures on the young Schoenberg, using the latter’s work to illustrate the relation between tradition and the avant-garde. Adorno’s three double-length lectures on the young Schoenberg, in which he spoke as a passionate advocate for the composer whom Boulez had declared dead, were his first at Darmstadt to be recorded on tape. The relation between tradition and the avant-garde was the leitmotif of the lectures that followed, which continued over the next decade. Adorno also dealt in detail with problems of composition in contemporary music, and he often accompanied his lectures with off-the-cuff musical improvisations. The five lecture courses he gave at Darmstadt between 1955 and 1966 were all recorded and subsequently transcribed, and they are published here for the first time in English. This volume is a unique document on the theory and history of the New Music. It will be of great value to anyone interested in the work of Adorno and critical theory, in German intellectual and cultural history, and in the history of modern music.
