Under the auspices of the National Park Service, the Survey was initially organized in 1933 with architects employed under several Federal relief programs. The next year the National Park Service entered into an agreement with the American Institute of Architects and the Library of Congress to conduct the Survey on a per manent basis. Under this agreement, the Park Service administers the Survey with funds appropriated by Con gress; the American Institute of Architects provides professional counsel through its national membership; and the Library of Congress preserves the records and makes them available for study and reproduction.
