Excerpt from The Telephone Hand-Book This little book has no pretension to be considered a complete treatise on telephony as it exists in America. The time for such a work is not yet come. But it is felt that there is a demand for a practical book on telephone working and management, and The Telephone Hand-Book is an attempt at meeting that demand. With the exception of a few chapters dealing with certain forms of transmitters and receivers used in Europe, which are given for the information of those who are unfamiliar with other types of instruments than those used in this country, the book is based entirely on standard American practice; and most of the material, apparatus and methods described are peculiar to or have originated in this country. With the illustrations no time nor trouble has been spared to make them clear and intelligible, and of real service to the reader. The great majority of them have been executed especially for the book; quite a number have never been published before, others have appeared in the Electrical Engineer and Electrical Review, generally in connection with my own articles. These latter have been re-drawn from the original material wherever possible. As this is the first practical book on American telephone methods, sins of commission and omission will no doubt be met with in its pages. Excerpt from The Telephone and Telephone Exchanges: Their Invention and Development In the following pages the attempt has been made so to relate the inventions and developments in the telephone field that the record may constitute in effect a short history of the telephone industry. The original intention was to write a history, but I was advised on authority which in the book world is entitled to respect not to exceed the limits of a single volume. As that advice has been followed it is considered that the word 'history' as a title should be held in reserve for the use of the author or authors who may produce the comprehensive treatise which the subject deserves. The original intention has, however, been followed in an abbreviated form. The principal inventions have been selected. The circumstances leading up to them, the developments resulting from them, and the influences bearing on them, have been considered with all the detail that space permits. But telephone exchange service is not merely a matter of plant and invention. Technical, commercial, and political threads compose the fabric, and they are interwoven in the record. The recital of the prior causes has served in most cases to make clear the technical features. In recounting the progress of Bell's invention reference is frequently made to the evidence given by him in various suits, noted for the sake of brevity as 'Deposition.' The full title is 'The Bell Telephone: The Deposition of Alexander Graham Bell in the suit brought by the United States to annul the Bell patents.' The suit was abandoned, but the deposition (in which is included evidence taken in other suits) was printed in 1908 by the American Bell Telephone Co. 'because of its historical value and scientific interest.' This book of 469 pages, though not published in the ordinary sense, is available for reference in most technical libraries. The time since the second edition was exhausted has been utilized in making many changes in the matter already presented, and in the preparation of much new matter, all of which it is thought will make the work more valuable as a guide and general reference-book in practical telephony. The chapter on Automatic Exchanges has been written because the book seemed incomplete without it. If it is here. After criticised for containing no descriptions of practical appa ratus, my plea will be that it is mainly the fault of the subject. That very important factor in modern telephony, the storage battery, was certainly very inadequately handled in the first edi tion. Chapter XXXV. Is intended to remedy this. The last chapter, on Specifications, is given as a help rather than as an inflexible guide to those drawing specifications. The specifications given represent modern practice, but they are not meant to serve in the place of common sense or of engineering ability. The writing of a letter takes time, and the conveyance of the letter to its destination takes much longer time. The telegraph is instantaneous so far as the conveyance of the electric Signal between point and point is concerned, but it can only be used by expert operators, and the original message must be written at the dispatching end and transcribed afresh at the receiving end. The telephone, on the contrary, is instantaneous between individual and individual. The expert operator is only required to effect the communica tion between the two individuals wishing to speak to one another. The moment that has been done they can talk together almost as easily as if they were in the same room. There is no other means of communication which confers advantages even approaching those given by the telephone.
