The year is 401 BC, a new art form is burgeoning, what we now call La Tene, or Celtic, spreading north from the alpine regions. Three years earlier Athens had finally been defeated by Sparta and her allies; Rome is but a fledgling city state; the Etruscan confederation is in decline; hordes of Gallic warriors are rampaging south over the Alps and through all this, two from the far northern Tin Islands, blithely wander. It is a tale related by a contemporary storyteller, thankfully unconstrained by words and phrases that had been off limits to the Teller when entertaining his Iron Age audience. Notwithstanding, the style of delivery remains concise, avoiding hyperbole and melodrama, with the narrator hoping, as the Teller had done, to paint pictures in people's minds. The dialogue is again fairly contemporary, minus anything too modern, such as current phrases, slang, or anything pandering to recent trends. Underlying all, is the tension felt by the Teller, bound by his pact with the all-powerful spirit world, those who had bestowed the gift to entertain by his words, on condition he never immersed himself in their world. To actually alter the course of a life, he felt certain, would at the very least, bring loss of the ability he'd been granted and at worst, he could not even begin to imagine the scale of retribution exacted. Breaking that pact, invited tragedy, but when would it strike? The not knowing was worse than the certainty it would.

“Bisi Adjapon writes with incredible vividness and clarity. Her similes and attention to all of the senses are really extraordinary.”—Dave Eggers, author of The Monk of Mokha “Melding blistering humor with razor-sharp insight, The Teller of Secrets heralds a marvel of a writer, one capable of deftly balancing questions of sexuality, politics, and feminism in a novel that is a pure joy to read.”—Maaza Mengiste, author of The Shadow King, Shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize In this stunning debut novel—a tale of self-discovery and feminist awakening—a feisty Nigerian-Ghanaian girl growing up amid the political upheaval of late 1960s postcolonial Ghana begins to question the hypocrisy of her patriarchal society, and the restrictions and unrealistic expectations placed on women. Young Esi Agyekum is the unofficial “secret keeper” of her family, as tight-lipped about her father's adultery as she is about her half-sisters’ sex lives. But after she is humiliated and punished for her own sexual exploration, Esi begins to question why women's secrets and men's secrets bear different consequences. It is the beginning of a journey of discovery that will lead her to unexpected places. As she navigates her burgeoning womanhood, Esi tries to reconcile her own ideals and dreams with her family’s complicated past and troubled present, as well as society’s many double standards that limit her and other women. Against a fraught political climate, Esi fights to carve out her own identity, and learns to manifest her power in surprising and inspiring ways. Funny, fresh, and fiercely original, The Teller of Secrets marks the American debut of one of West Africa's most exciting literary talents.

The Teller, volume 2, is a continuation of the story of survival in what we call, the Early Iron Age, made all the more desperate by the fact two potentially hostile tribes now occupied the same coveted swathe of territory, actually the rich, rolling farmlands north of the river Severn.

Twenty-three-year-old Elaine Kelly doesn't earn much as a bank teller, and most of her salary goes toward caring for her terminally ill mother. When a lonely old man who deposits money at her bank every week gets hit and killed by a delivery truck, Elaine--a good Irish girl from Queens--thinks she's found the answer to her problems. She'll just transfer $1 million from the dead man's account into hers. Except that the lonely old man may not have been who he seemed. And when you take $1 million that isn't yours, it can cost you...way more. Acclaimed author Jonathan Stone's pulse-pounding thriller takes readers from the darkest corners of New York's financial empire into a shadowy hierarchy of wealth and power. The Teller follows the money--and takes readers along for the wild ride.
